BOROUGH BY-LAW BROKEN.

Several’ Ha.wera youths who were caught by the Hawera. borough inspector, Mr. L. Hunt, riding bicycles without lights after sunset were fined by Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Hawera Magistrate’s Court yesterday. “Unlighted bicycles are a great source of danger, not only to the rider, but also to other people,” remarked the magistrate. Clifford Young, pleaded guilty to riding a bicycle without a light at 5.35 p.rii. on June 19. He was fined £.l, and costs, 10s. On June 30, about 5.30 p.m., Charles F. Taylor rode a bicycle along Victoria Street without a light. He was fined £l. end costs 10s..
James Campbell, aged IS years, rode a bicycle along .Glover Road on June 19 without a light. He had an electric lamp attached to the bicycle, said the inspector, but apparently the bulb had fused. In view, of that fact the magistrate, convicted and ordered defendant to pay costs only, 10s.

Under judgment summons, T. Sanson was ordered to pay A. E. Dunbar £lO 9s. 9d. forthwith, in default 10 days’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended so long as debtor pays 10s. a week. W. F. Gulliver was ordered to pay W J. Claringbold and Co. £l6 4s. Id. forthwith,, in default imprisonment for 14 days. ' -';•'*' ■■ W. Dose Matte was ordered to pay A. H. Shaw £(l Jls 41. forthwith, in default six days’ imprisonment. Whamnn.i Tai Non was ordered to pay E. Penfold £49 J 3s. forthwith, in default 48 days’ imprisonment, tbe warrant to be suspended so long as debtor pays £2 a month.
J. Coleman was ordered to pay Stanley R. Johnson £3 J7s. Id. forthwith, in default four days’ imprisonment. H. M. Mills was ordered to pay A. F. Anderson £4 12s. forthwiih, in defaultfive days’ imprisonment.
DIVORCED COUPLE’S TROUBLES.
CHARGES AGAINST THE HUSBAND.
A Sunday morning visit to bis wife’s residence, ostensibly to see one of his children, led to the appearance before Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Hawera Magistrate’s Court yesterday of William David Wasley, a, labourer, who was charged .with behaving in an offensive, threatening, insulting and disorderly manner, and.with using.abusive and insulting words in view of a public place. He was further charged with neglecting or refusing to leave 'the premises of Emily Wasley, in .High Street, after being warned to do so. On the first dharge Wasley was fined £2 25., with costs amounting..to 15s. The second charge was dismissed. Mr. P. O’Dea appeared for Wasley, and Mr. L. A. Taylor represented the wife. It was stated that the pair had been divorced about 15 months ago, Wasley
having been ordered to pay maintenance. On the Sunday in question he had visited his wife’s residence and asked to take his boy out. On the grounds that Wasley was under the influence of liquor Airs. Wasley had refused to allow the boy to leave the house. Wasley had then become abusive, calling her a prostitute and alleging that she had been to Auckland on. a threc-week.
holiday with another man. His talking was very loud, and could have been hoard across the street. "When requested to leave the premises he had refused to do so, but had eventually gone, cutting a bicycle tyre on his way out. Wasley was allowed two weeks in which to pay the line.
SOUTH TARANAKI HOCKEY.
OTAKEHO BEAT ALHAMBRA
There was a fast and interesting game of hockey at Hawera yesterday, Otakeho beating Alhambra by two goals to one. There was little between the teams, though the winenrs displayed more finish to their attacking movements. Surgenor and Putt scored for Otakeho and A. Bell for Alhambra. There was also a closely contested ladies’ match at Hawera. Otakeho beat Ramblers by two goals to nil, Misses G. Bennett and L. Putt scoring.
