PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY

FORM. MAY BECOME STABILISED.

(By

“Mot urea.")

Always a difficult meeting for bettors, the opening day of the Wellington winter gathering saw many “good things” beaten, but with that form to guide them, the public may experience a better turn of luck to-day.

Zippor and Avro fell on the first day and Mountain Guide was not impressive. Opa is a newcomer who may give some trouble, but AVRO and Paris are likely to carrv the bulk of the money toda v.

Prince Desmond (Chief RulerRosie Desmond) made his first public appearance when he ran third in a maiden race at the Feilding Easter meeting and created a great impression by that effort. The Trial Plate to-day will find him in the public view again, and the halfbrother to Mireusonta, Kiosk and — Co. can be relied upon to give a good account of himself. « * * *

Always a difficult race to sort out. the Trial Plate looks extremely open. Coon Song and Desert Song read the best of the three-year-olds, and then a fair turn of speed has been shown by the youngsters, Arisuc, Acnul. Ganpat, Jayson, King Musket, Prince Desmond, ißosshire ami Vandyke. The two-year-old division appears to bo unusually strong, and the winner is likely to come from there. For that reason ARISUS, Prince Desmond and Ganpat are selected to provide the place-getters.

The Sea town Handicap should give Tlll'l WARDEN a chance to make amends for his - defeat on Tudsday, though Town Major and Banbridge are sure to keep him moving.

Much the same crowd appear in the IMariri Steeplechase, but HYMESTRAiSON scored so decisively that he again looks like accounting for Sir Moment.

The big race is the Parliamentary Handicap, and should MENDIP improve on his run the first day, it looks as if he will be too good for High Pitch and True Blood. Gray will ride Mendip.

Hurdle jockeys will have their say in the Highweight Handicap, and whatever A. E. Ellis rides will carry the money. At this stage THE SUN, Luminary and Carinthia read as well as anything.

A number of newcomers feature in the Members’ Handicap, notably PALESA, who won at Hawera. Hopwood and Havering may offer most opposition.

The weakest field of the day is in the Petoiie Handicap, and PORTBAY, who chased Coon Song home the first day, may be a warm favourite over Killigrew and Glenrossie.
