FINANCE FOR DIOCESE
WORK Or BISHOP CHERRINGTON
contributions from England
(By Wire- Special Reporter.) Hamilton.
According to the Vicar-General,. Archdeacon Gordon Bell, Bishop Cherrington ,1s working very hard in England, enlisting financial help for the Waikato dioebee.
During Archdeacon Bell’s charge to the synod last night he said the bishop needed a rest and holiday after’ his arduous labours of recent years, but he was by no means taking his time in England ae either a rest or a holiday. On the. contrary, he was very actively engaged in securing interest and support for the diocese among his friends and other church people. Every Sunday and many week days were taken up with sermons and lectures in connection with the Waikato Diocesan Association, which the bishop had called into existence to help the diocese through the difficulties of the early years of its exist nee. In letters the bishop reported having received sympathy and promises of lielp were given. In a cable last week he said he had £lOOO in sight towards the reduction of the overdraft on the diocesan general fund account, and in addition £3OO a year was promised towards the income of the fund. As a result of the bishop’s labours it seemed as if he would be able to do a very great deal towards lightening the burdens of the clergy and laity of the backblocks and sparsely populated parochial districts—burdens which he felt keenly and towards the lightening of which he had constantly laboured.
