WAIKATO DIOCESAN FUNDS
SHARE OF AUCKLAND WEALTH. (By Wire—Special to News.) Hamilton, Last Night. Attention to the affluence of the Auckland Diocese and the comparative poverty of the Waikato. Diocese was drawn by Archdeacon G. G. Bell, vicar-general, in his charge to the Waikato Synod at St. Peter’s Cathedral last evening. After detailing the anomalous position which arose regarding trusts and endowments when the Waikato Diocese was separated from that of Auckland five years ago the archdeacon summarised his view as follows: — . '. “At the time of the creation of this diocese it was contended by Waikato representatives, and the principle was conceded, that the allocation of endowments must be viewed not from the standpoint that the diocese of Auckland was "iving what it could to establish a new diocese but that the whole diocese of Auckland was being divided into two portions—one to retain the name of Auckland, the other to be named Waikato, each portion of the divided diocese to have a fair share of the financial resources of the whole, “The indivisibility of certain trusts militated against this principle being appled throughout, but it does seem to me that Waikato should have received a larger share of the divisible endowments. Admittedly the Waikato representatives accepted and agreed to the allocations made, but they were comparatively inexperienced in diocesan affairs and possibly unduly optimistic. Anyhow, experience has shown that Waikato has been left in a condition of comparative poverty of endowment, and as I said when opening this subject, difference in this matter as between the . present diocese of Auckland and the diocese of Waikato strikes a newcomer like myself very strongly. “It may be asked what good result may come from bringing up this question afresh. My hope is that the revelation of the position may lead to the present diocese of Auckland in charity and generosity of spirit making an appeal to the general Synod or joining with us in so doing that tho commission may be instructed to sit again with a view to revision of the allocations. “Revisions which appear to me to be possible and equitable are: (1) That a much larger proportion of the cathedral trust No. 5 might bo allocated o Waikato; (2) that some; portion of the capital of Auckland central fund might also bo allocated to Waikato.”
