PUKEKURA PARK BOARD

VANDALISM DISCUSSED. Vandalism was discussed at a meetin<r of the Park Board in New Plymouth last night. Mr. I. Amoore presided, others present being Messrs G. M. Spence, R. W. Tata, I. Parker, W. Short, C. E. Bellringer, P. E. Stainton and the curator, Mr. 1. Horton. oa The curator reported that on May. Z2 he had caught three boys on the Fillis .Street section in the act of lighting a fire made of about a dozen young more trees. He had reprimanded them and had reported the matter to the chairman. Vandalism had continued in the park for some time, said Mr. Spence. Now that some .vandals" had been caught an example should be made of them. It would be a deterrent for the future. Mr. Bellringer did not consider that these boys’ were responsible for the removing of notice boards, and it wa« hardly fair that they should be made to pay an extreme penalty. He was in favour of the matter being continued, however, and Mr. Tate was requested to see the police. The chairman reported that the building of the curator’s new house -was progressing satisfactorily. Mr. Spence suggested that in place of the one pine tree proposed to be cut down near the site for the residence, the four should be removed. It was decided that the board should meet at the park on Thursday morning. Mr. Horton reported that the board had met at the park on May 23 and had decided upon the felling of certain trees, the balance of the work now bein"- completed. Parts of the park iequlrin" most attention were being overhauled* The poplars near Maxwell’s and at Brooklands had been felled. The three islands in tiie new lily lake had. ‘been trimmed. The Gilbert Street path had been reformed anc metalled and metalling work had been done on other parts. About fifty trees had been planted and others would be planted before the season was over. Mrs. M. Ainsworth advised that because of ill-health she was relinquishing the tenancy of the kiosk at th® park. Her proposal was received with regret and a sub-committee .was set up to make arrangement*.
