DEATH OF DANIEL BROPHY

FUNERAL SERVICE AT OKATO. The lengthy cortege, representative of the district from New Plymouth to Pihama, that attended the funeral of Mr. Daniel Brophy at the Okato cemetery yesterday, provided a silent but eloquent tribute to the esteem in which Mr. Brophy was held by the settlers. Mr. Brophy, who was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Brophy, wa>s born in the Oxford Road home 50 years ago, and on the death' of his father carried on the homestead property, which he farmed until his death. His death, after such a short illness—he was about as usual the previous Sunday—came as a shock to the district. He was one of the original directors of the Oxford Road Dairy Company on its formation 16 years ago, and with the exception of one term had held the position ever since. For over 20 years he was one of the Okato cemetery trustees. Mr. Brophy, who never married, is survived by one sister, Mrs. Joe Lawn (Okato), and three brothers, Messrs. Martin (Pihama), James (Okato), and Patrick (Warea). Requiem mass was held at the Okato church in the morning and the Rev. Father Kennedy (Opunake), assisted by the Revs. Father Min-, ogue (New Plymouth) and Harnett (Patea) performed the last rites at the graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs. M. Brophy. P. Brophy, T. Brophy, John Lawn, Joe Lawn and L. O’Sullivan.
