OPUNAKE PUBLIC SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the school committee was held on Thursday evening. Members present were Messrs. G. H. Hutton (chairman),’ A. Hinch, T. P. Hughson, jun.. A. K. McNae, H. H. Gilshnan and S. Bier. . . , - • The headmaster reported that the roll numbers and attendances for June wefes Secondary roll 52, average attendance 43.6, primary roll .188,. average attendance 167.7 Miss Scarrow, of the high school staff, was absent owing to illness; Miss Johnstone ■ was relieving. Nothing yet had been done to improv® the' heating system at the high school, Basketball posts had been procured as authorised. . ... - - - The chairman reported that a delegation from the Education Board visited the high school and inspected the heating system, and had been of opinion a larger element would improve the heating apparatus. The impression the committee gained was that the board would effect the improvements. The Power Board engineer (it was reported) was of opinion that the present system would never be a success. ■ ', , The Town Board clerk wrote that tn® board would procure and erect notice boards warning motorists of the vicinity of the schools. "■ 1 ‘ , In reply to the chairman the headmaster stated school children' were directed- definitely to take exits from th® ground in the direction of homes, and to observe the rules in crossing the roads.
MR. ALLEN FAREWELLED. ~ The Star of Opunake Lodge farewelled Mr W. Allen prior to his departure for Kai Iwi. He was presented with a razor and strop, and after expressions of good wishes an enjoyable hour was spent in song and musical items. After leaving OpUnake Mr. Allen met with misfortune, his motor-car striking an embankment- at: Pihama~
