N.S.W. COAL CONCESSIONS
EXPLANATION OF LOWER FREIGHT By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Mr. 0. M. McDonald, chairman of the Northern Collieries Association of New South Wales, has sent the following cable message to the Dominion concerning freight concessions on coal made by the New South Wales railways: “Referring to statements that appeared in the Press I desire as chairman of the Northern Collieries Association to state we have consistently and persistently refused to entertain any idea of . a bounty on coal production. The coal industry was specially selected in the past for the imposition of exorbitant charges to make up deficits in the general railway revenue and the present reduction in charges of 6d a ton la merely an adjustment to a less inequitable basis. The balance of the reduction in price is contributed by the proprietors and men.”
