RUGBY AT WHANGAMOMONA

VICTORY FOR MANGAONE.

POOR HANDLING NOTICEABLE. For the first time this season the Whangamoniona Rugby team suffered defeat at tho hands of Mangaone at Tangarakau on Saturday. Played under ideal conditions and before a large crowd of spectators the game was very willing. Whangamomona was weakened by the absence of two of the best players, W. Hight and R. Callaghan, but the backs were noticeably below form and handled the ball badly. Mangaone played well and there were some pretty movements, the players keeping their positions and combining well. Wliangamomona penetrated to Mangaone’e 25 but mishandled. The Whangamomona pack were too clever at a lineout and kicked down-field. The ball went beyond the dead-ball line. Spirited play followed, Evans taking play to half-way where he was tackled. Whangamomona was gaining ground when Ericksen found the line smartly. Mangaone resumed the offensive but knocked on as the ball crossed the line. Dalbeth did good work and Whangamoniona crossed but off-side play occurred. At Mangaone’s 25 B. O’Dea tried for a penalty goal but missed. Dalbeth put in a good run and eolid play occurred on Mangaone’s line. Evans saved with a good line kick. Wliangamomona was unfortunate when Barnes went to within ten yards and kicked. Dalbeth raced for the* ball but it went a few inches over the dead-ball line. Whangamomona attacked again, Mora dribbling through and being supported by O’Dea who scored in the corner. O’Dea missed with the kick. ' Sorties by Mangaone were well stopped by Barnes and Taylor. Mangaone attacked spiritedly and Ericksen and Evans went almost over in a passing rush. A reversal of position occurred when Barnes kicked hard and Whangamomona raced for the ball but Evans managed to find the line. Play swung back to Whangamomona’s 25. Mangaone kept up the attack and taking a splendid opportunity Ericksen calmly drop-kicked a goal. Whangamomona, a point behind, attacked solidly but was soon worn out and on the defensive. Faulty handling cost Mangaone a certain try. Ericksen kicked hard and was on Taylor before he could kick. Taylor fell on the ball but was penalised and Mangaone attempted a goal but missed. Mangaone intercepted a badly directed pass and dashed from half-way to Whangamomona’s line bi.. knocked on. The pace proved too much for Whangamomona and Ericksen scored near the corner. The kick failed. O’Dea attempted to drop-kick a goal and Mangaone forced. Mangaone secured from a scrum and Evans kicked into, touch beyond half-way in Whangamomona territory. Ericksen kicked hard and rushed Taylor, whose kick rebounded, Whangamomona just saving. Mangaone was strung out at Whangamomona’s line and with 1 series of perfect passes Shot .the ball out to the wing, Mayo scoring. The kick missed. .Kennedy almost scored for Mangaone before the final whistle sounded: Mangaone 10, Whangamomona 3. Mr. Bell was referee. PERSONAL AND GENERAL.
