The circumstances of the case were explained by the police when the case was mentioned last week. Maxwell, who had been a porter in a hotel in New Plymouth was in hospital in April. ‘ He put up at the Midland Hotel in Wellington after leaving New Plymouth with £5 in his pocket. The tariff at the Midland was 25s a day, and he ran up a total bill of £lB 19s 6d. . The manager spoke to him about his bill and he replied that a cheque was coming to him from New Plymouth. On May 25 he left the hotel, taking his things, without paying.
