FINISH OF FIRST ROUND

WAIMATE ■ DEFEATED BY HAWERA INTERESTING POSITION IN SOUTH LITTLE CHANGE IN THE NORTH Saturday saw the close of the first round of the Taranaki senior Rugby competition, the games being played in fine weather with dry grounds and balk In the southern division Hawera inflicted the second successive defeat on Waimate and Okaiawa drew with Opunake. As Patea had a comfortable win over Eltham the championship position in the south becomes very interesting, no less than five teams being separated ,by only three points. Patea has advanced from third position to tie with Opunake in the lead, while Waimate has dropped to third place, a point below. Hawera and Opunake, separated by one point, are fourth and fifth. In the northern division there is little change. Stratford easily defeated Celtic and maintained the two-point lead from Old Boys, who defeated Tukapa by 9 points to 7. Clifton defeated Inglewood by 11 points to 3, putting Inglewood out of the championship. In the north it looks as if the decision will be between Stratford and Old Boys.' RESULTS AT A GLANCE.
