EARNINGS OF RAILWAYS

FIRST RETURN OF NEW YEAR. A working profit of £122,270 is shown by the Railway Department’s working accounts for the first four weeks, ended April 26, of the new financial year. The corresponding period last year gave a working profit of £107,365 and that of 1928 one of £130,221. Part of .tlnv variation may be attributed to the incidence of Easter, which fell in April in 1929 and again this year, whereas last year it was at the cud of March.

The gross earnings were £640,590 and the expenses £518,320. Both are higher than last year, the former by £22,173 and the latter by £7279. ■_ The working profit in .the North Island was £51,758, an increase of £6504; that in the South Island was £41,01'2, a reduction of £973. Revenue from services other than railway operating shows an excess over expenditure of £29.500. which is. £9374 move than in the corresponding period last year.
