SOUTH TARANAKI POWER.

(To the Editor.)' Sir,—I have been asked by our committee to forward the enclosed table of comparison of charges to you, and we would be glad if you would publish it. The position is as follows:—. The ratepayers of this district are deemed in the outer area of the South Taranaki Power Board’s area, and owing to the great difference of charges, etc., we have been trying for this last three and a half years to be released from the South Taranaki Board and to be allowed to purchase our light and power from the Wanganui-Rangitikei Power Board. In the first place a big public meeting was held here in December, 1920, and as the outcome a strong committee was formed, which represented 246 ratepayers, 98 per cent, of whom signed a petition, which we presented to the Governor-in-Council. From that time on we have interviewed Mr. Coates, Mr. Ransom, Mr. Furkert and Mr. Kissel, but we reach finality. The Minister of Public Works tells us that from a national point of view we should remain with South Taranaki, but we fail to see his point for the following reasons:— (1) Loss of time in getting light and power; the Wanganui-Rangitikei Power Board advised us that had they been allowed to reticulate us we could have had light and power within six or eight months from the time of application, whereas 3J years have elapsed, and if we are compelled to remain in the Taranaki area it will probably be fully four or five years before they can supply us. (2) Difference of charges in light and power as shown in the enclosed statement of charges.—l am, etc., L. R. DAVIES, Secretary. Alton, June 12, 1930.
