WAIMATE WEST COUNTY

ALLOCATION OF TRAFFIC FEES. ELTHAM SCHEME FAVOURED. The monthly meeting of the Waimate West County Council yesterday was attended by Messrs E. Long (chairman), T. A. Bridge, J. Leslie, J. S. McKay and F, Mourie. The council favoured the proposed alteration in the allocation of heavy traffic fees. The report of the engineer covering the past fortnight’s operations stated 300 yards of boulders had been crushed :on Upper Auroa Road. This was being rolled and blinded. Tar patching had been carried out on Oco, Sheet and Auroa roads and maintenance on Normanby, Main South, Glenn and other roads. After considerable discussion it was resolved to' obtain a new three or fourton lorry with pneumatic tyres to replace the old one, which was. in need of much reconditioning. The chairman explained the position in regard to the Opaku education reserves and it was decided to support the Stratford Borough Council in a pro-, itest against the suggestion to have these diverted from Taranaki. The Eltharn County Council’s proposal to allocate heavy traffic fees on a new basis was considered. The system as outlined in the schedule submitted was supported. The chairman reported at length on the various matters discussed at the recent meeting of the Taranaki Local Bodies’ Association. Notice of motion was given to strike a general rate at next meeting as follows: —Waimate Riding, •! 5-12 d; Kaupokonui Riding, IJd. MATAPU NEWS. The sixth Of a’.series of euchre parties and dances was held in the Ma-<' tapu Hall on Tuesday, when all the card tables were filled and there was a good crowd of dancers ready to take the floor after the euchre, The first prizes for the evening were won by Mrs. W. A. Guy and Mr. G. Revell, while the second prizes' were won by Miss M. Guy and Mr. Taylor, sen. Music for the dancing was supplied by Miss M. Guy. Miss B. Seed played extras. The Matapu school football team went to Kaponga on Saturday to play the third match of .the fixtures. After a hard, tussle Matapu won by 11 —6. Tries for Matapu were scored by Hurley, Simpson (2), and Simpson converted one. For Kaponga Thoumine scored two'tries. Mri J. Bennie was referee. Mr. and Mrs. A. Thomas and family are leaving the district shortly. Mr. Thomas was a member and chairman of the hall. committee, and a member of the school committee for a number of years. Mr. J. Donald, Morrinsville, has been spending a few days with friends in Matapu. Miss Myrtle Gatenby, Patea, is spending a holiday with her family. Mr. R. Greenough is spending a week at Auckland. Mrs. W. Graham is spending a holiday with relatives. Mr. Gordon Lawrie, Waitoa, Te Aroha, is spending a holiday with Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Reid, Lower Hunter Road, Matapu. Mr. and Mrs. C. Simpson have been spending a holiday in Auckland. NORMANBY NEWS. •SCHOOL ACTIVITIES. There was a small attendance of householders at a meeting held in the school bn Monday, Owing to the nonattendance of Mr. Reid, who had promised to -give details regarding the formation of a school, orchestra, it was decided to leave the matter in abeyance. In. reply to a circular from the Education Board regarding the proposed alteration of the summer vacation, it was decided that until further information be forthcoming, Normanby could not support the change. At the meeting of the school committee those present were Messrs A. E. Spratt (chairman), Linn, MeCaffery, Somers, Evans, and Peach.

The secretary reported that the profit from the euchre party was £4 8s 2d. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the donors of the prizes, Messrs Galloway and Son, and Mr. P. J. Linn. The headmaster reported that the inspectors had visited the school during May. The chairman, in referring to the dental clinic, pointed out that it was essential that all parents should sign the forms supplied by the authorities, thereby making their children eligible for treatment.

It was decided to hold a working bee at the school grounds next Saturday morning at nine o’clock. Messrs P. J. Linn and T. Pickering were appointed the visiting committee for June. A vote of sympathy was accorded Mr. A. E. Spratt in the death of his mother. Mrs. M. Stewart, Otorohanga, is spending a holiday with her mother. GENERAL AND PERSONAL. The Rev. J. R. Young and Mrs. Young, Hawera, motored through to Auckland yesterday. They expect to return on Monday. Taking as his subject “Our Life in the Light of Christ’s Message and the" Cross,” the Rev. R. E. Evans delivered an inspiring address at the penultimate meeting of the St. John’s Presbyterian mission last evening. The senior choir rendered the anthem, “When I Survey the Wondrous Gros.” The mission will conclude to-night. A dance arranged by the sports club and hall committee will be held at Oeo this evening. The annual novelty ball at Manaia has been fixed for July 9.
