BREEDING CLYDESDALES
SOCIETY’S ANNUAL MEETING RECORD YEAR REPORTED. BUSINESS OF THE COUNCIL. According to its balance-sheet the Clydesdale Horse Society of New Zealand has every reason to feel proud of its operation during the past year. The year just closed has been a record one from every viewpoint. Subscriptions amounted to £867 2s 3d. From this it would be seen that members were realising the benefit of the society and taking advantage of the privileges financial membership afforded. Entry and transfer fees had shown a considerable increase on the previous year, which went to prove that breeders were realising the value of registering their animals. These were statements contained in the report presented at the annual meeting held in Dunedin on June 4. In the absence of the president, Mr. S. Fleming, Mr. J. D. Wyllie, vice-presi-dent, presided over an attendance of twenty members. The report stated that the membership of the society was 720, and every member was asked to assist the society by making every endeavour to enrol as members of the society every breeder with whom they come in contact. The society was one of the few breed societies in the Dominion which handed to its members a free copy of the Stud Book annually, together with the privileges of entry aiid transfer fees at half -rates. . During the year four stallions and colts and three mares and. fillies were imported from Scotland, and two colts and two fillies from Australia. Nino., stallions and colts and two fillies were exported to Australia during the year. Several of these animals had gained premier .honours- for their new. ; owners in the Commonwealth.- ./ DISPERSAL SALES. Two notable dispersal sales of Clydesdale studs—Maraekakaho, owned by the late Sir R. D. D. McLean, and Middlerigg, owned by Mr. John Boag —had taken place. The prices realised at these sales should be sufficient proof to breeders that the demand for good horses was never better, and should encourage every breeder to carry on with the good work. So long as they produced the right quality horses they had nothing to fear in regard to prices. At Maraekakaho sale the average price for over 100 head, comprising mares, fillies, stallions, colts and geldings, averaged well over £4O per head, while at the Middlerigg dispersal sale the average price was £44 per head. The report of th© treasurer, Mr. A. Hunter, stated it would be noted by the comparative statements of the re- ■ ceipts that with two exceptions there were increases. Of the two exceptions nomination fees showed a drop of near--ly £l5, but this was still good, for ( 1928-29 had been almost double the next highest year, and the average over ' the past ten years was £5 10s Cd. The \ total receipts had topped the £lOOO mark in 1924-25, and had not since been ! below that amount, while the general ( trend had been upward, until the past { year showed a record of £l4lB 7s sd. i The assets were practically all investments and cash. Of the stocks held the ' first to mature would be two years hence—l 932. The amount of the deposits and accrued interest was £760. 1 There would be volume 12 of the Stud f Book and current expenses to inect, 1 but with cash and amounts coming in c it should be possible to invest £7OO of the deposits. He would therefore recommend that the society authorise him . to invest up to £700; that would permit of accepting suitable investments ? as available, and if money were some- a what slow in coming in the society I could invest say £6OO and hold £lOO n towards the payment of printing tlie I Stud Book. If the society could invest I £7OO it would bring the annual re- G ceipts for interest up to £l6O. ii t ELECTION TO COUNCIL. 'J
