INGLEWOOD BOROUGH

COUNCIL’S WORK REVIEWED. DRINKING IN HALL DISCUSSED. The work of the month was reviewed at the meeting of the Inglewood Borough Council last night. The Mayor, Mr. J. W. Winfield, presided, and others present were Messrs. B. Larson, J. Gibbs, I. P. Grant, W. H. Armstrong and F. Spurdie. The Stratford Borough Council wae supported in its move to induce the Government to oppose the movement to depriving the people of Taranaki of the sole benefits arising from the Opaku reserve. The chairman stated that the remit had been adopted by the Taranaki local bodies and on his recommendation the council gave its support. The Taranaki Local Bodies’ Association asked if the council was prepared to join in the combined purchase of bitumen. The matter was left to the works committee. The council considered that as present arrangements for the distribution of heavy traffic fees favoured it, the question was best left in the hands of the -finance committee to report at the next meeting. Mr. Gibbs asked that some screened metal be placed in front of the gate of a residence in Brown Street, the footpath in this vicinity having been scoured.

Regarding the council’s power to abolish drinking in dance halls and cabarets, the Order of Good Templars drew attention to the Hon. T. M. Wilford’s declaration that all councils which issued licenses to dance halls and cabarets already had the power to control this evil by making it a condition that •intoxicating liquors should not be allowed in such places for consumption and. provision could be made for the

cancelling of any license where a breach of the condition was proved. The chairman: We issue no license and in the hire of the hall it is understood that there is to be no drinking inside the hall. No doubt the drinking is done outside. Perhaps this could be controlled if the committees of the dances did not issue passes. This would make drinking rather expensive. Mr. Spurdie; What is there in the regulations to prohibit drinking in the halls ? The Mayor: It is morally understood. Mr. Armstrong-. Smoke concerts are held at the hall. The Mayor: This resolution refers only to dances. Mr. Spurdie: Then it is for the council to give permission whether or not liquor is to be partaken on the. premises. The hall committee was asked to make strict investigation and to report. It was reported that vehicles were trespassing on the footpath at the Town Hall when functions were being held there. Considerable discussion was evoked and it was resolved to leave the matter in the hands of the inspector with power to act. It was decided that the approved list of rates for the ensuing year be levied. During the month Standish, Kelly, Brookes and Miro Streets and paths had received attention, stated the report of the borough overseer (Mr. W. Devereaux). The intersection of Kelly and Miro ■Streets had been sealed with bitumen and chips. A portion of the intersection of Cutfield and Carrington Streets had been tar-sealed. The electrical engineer (Mr. H. Winton) reported that the number of units registered at the sub-station for the month had been 41,921 and for May, 1929, 37,453 units had been registered. During the month several of the existing installations had been brought up to the standard required by the Government regulations, and this work would be continued until the whole of the consumers’ premises had ben reinspected.
