THE SALE OF LIQUOR

LICENSING OF THE VENDORS.

COMMITTEE’S ANNUAL MEETING.

“We have dealt with 13 licensed houses and only one objection has been made to the granting of licenses, while the police reports generally are good,” said the chairman, Mr. R. W. Tate, S.M., at the annual meeting of the Stratford Licensing Committee yesterday. “Though there has been only one conviction for after hours’ trading, the committee desires it known that such trading is looked on with disapproval and urges licensees to refrain from indulging in the practice,” he added. Applications for transfer, issue or renewal of license in respect of twelve houses were granted. In the case of the remaining hotel —the Club, Stratford—the question of renewal of the license was adjourned till July 14 pending an investigation into a certain complaint that has been made. MATAU NEWS. RELIEF WORKS CAMP. Under ths management of Mr. Thomas Chapman, the new series of euchre parties for the benefit of the hall funds was started on Friday. The attendance was very good, and a very pleasant evening was spent. Mrs. A. Rolfe won the ladies’ prize and Mr. W. Rawlinson and Mr. Ericcson played off for the men’s, the former winning. Supper followed, provided by the ladies, and a dance concluded the evening’s amusement. The “unemployed” camp on the Ma _ - ngaoapa is in full swing, and this hitherto lonely backblocks road presents a very cheerful appearance. The men are being catered for at a big cook shop run by a local resident and this is a decided •improvement on last year’s camp. At present about 30 men are employed. This road provides access to the Kiore station from Purangi. A scries of hard frosts is causing the farmers some concern. The roads are fast cutting up, and chains are necessary on all cars coming through. Repairs are being effected on one of the North Road bridges, the underpinning being re- . newed. I The Victoria League’s case of books II and also a posted parcel of children’s *books are being much appreciated. Thanks are due to Mr. W. McCoard for free cartage.
