PREMATURE EXPLOSION

QUARRY WORKER INJURED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. A premature explosion during blasting operations at the Halswell quarries to-day caused Frederick Joseph Sparks, aged 40, to be hurled down a slope from the top of the quarry. He was admitted 'to hospital with a broken arm, three broken ribs and suffering from severe shock. A gang of men had placed a shot in the face of the rock. To .Sparks was allotted the duty of firing the charge. Before Sparks got clear the charge fired unexpectedly and he was hurled down with a mass of rock. Fortunately he was not carried to the bottom of 'the quarry.
