Prince Carol has returned secretly and it is reported that reconciliation with -his his .wife, Princess Helen, is probable. He is said to have written her saying he had broken relations with Madame Lupescu. Owing to dissentions following Prince Carol’s return M. Maniu resigned the Premiership and the Regency Council called on the Foreign Minister, M. Mironescu, to form a Cabinet, which was accomplished within an hour. It is expected that both-Houses of Parliament will assemble on June 8 and proclaim Carol king, after which ML Mironescu’s Cabinet will resign in favour of the new Government to be appointed by Carol, whose divorce will be annulled by the Supreme Court, enabling Princess Helen to be crowned queen and the boy King Michael to be recognised as Crown Prince. A later message says reliable sources report that Carol has already proclaimed himself king. Under ordinary circumstances Prince Carol would- have succeeded his father, King Ferdinand, on the throne of Roumania. For long before Ferdinand died in July, 1927, Carol’s actions had Caused anxiety, and when the King died Carol abdicated his rights to the throne, preferring to live in the south of France and elsewhere with Madame Lupescu. Because of this alliance Princess Helen secured a divorce. (Upon Carol’s abdication of his rights his eldest son Michael, then aged five, was proclaimed king and a regency council was appointed to control affairs of State.
