MANAIA CUBS’ BIRTHDAY. TRIBUTES TO'CUBMISTRESS. To celebrate the second birthday of the Manaia Wolf Cub pack a number of parents and friends were invited* to attend a parade of the cubs on Thursday evening. Among those present were Mr. W. G. Strange, president of the Hawera Boy Scout committee; Mr. H. Pettit, cubmaster of the Hawera cubs, Miss Britland, cubmistress at Hawera, Mr. G. Payne, scoutmaster of the Manaia scouts, Miss B. Bridge, captain of the Manaia Girl Guides, and Mr. A. G. Bennett, member of the Manaia Boy Scouts committee. The Manaia cubs paraded under the cubmistress, Mrs. J. Christie, and the assistant cubmaster, Mr. R. Hammonds. When the pack was formed there were 12 members and now the membership is 27 - ■ 7 After giving, three cheers for their birthday the cubs gave their . yell and carried out an interesting series of physical drill, hakas, games, first aid, knot-tying, flag and compass symbolism and tug-of-war contests. The exhibition was highly appreciated by those present and much applause was evoked. In the absence of the president of the Manaia Boy Scouts committee, Mr. A. G. Bennett presented the badges earned during the year. These included tenderpad, second star, and service stars. The ( speaker congratulated the cubmistress on the splendid demonstration given. This had been very much appreciated by those present and it was evident that the hoys were benefiting from the careful training. They look I a very fine healthy lot of boys, and he urged upori join the scouts as soon as they becanie too old to remain cubs, so that the good work begun by Mrs. Christie could be continued. Mr. Strange, on behalf of the Ha we’a visitors, expressed appreciation of the good work being carried out by Mrs. Christie. The residents must feel very proud of her, he said. She had well taught the boys the first principles of life and had greatly assisted their physical development. "Mrs. Christie had a happy way of being able to understand the little ones and as a helpful guide she was most excellent. Major Sandford had advised him if he ever wanted any assistance to consult Mrs. Christie, and from her work it was evident that this advice was fully justified. The visitors were entertained to supper.

MANAIA TOWN BOARD. DOMAIN FUNDS IN CREDIT. The Manaia Town Board met on Thursday evening, there being present Messrs. H. Mead (chairman), A. H.‘ Yar-

row, A. J. Christie, W. H. Robinson, H. Symmans and V. F. Winter. A renewal r t the lease of the Waimate Domain for a further term of five years was granted Mr. J. O’Connor. Mr. A. George waited on the board with the request that the mud road to his property be metalled for a further two chains. The chairman replied that the foreman had been instructed to proceed with the work. The annual reports of the Manaia and Waimate domains were adopted. The former showed a credit balance of £9 • * and the latter a credit of £2O 18s 3d. The disposal of old seats from the town hall was left to the hall committee. ’ A letter was received from the Grand Lodge of Good Templars pointing out the evils of drinking in dance halls. The letter suggested that in the interests of the young men and women the board make provision for the complete control over the issue of hall licenses as will prevent a continuation or recurrence of the practice of allowing drink in dance halls and cabarets The chairman pointed out that the conditions complained of did not exist as far as Manaia was concerned and while expressing sympathy, with the object of the letter, he considered it was really outside the province of the town board. The Hawera Athletic Club was granted permission to conduct road races through the town during the winter. The Stratford Borough Council was supported in its move for the preservation of the Opaku Reserves for Taranaki educational purposes. The matter of erecting a ticket box at the Manaia domain entrance was brought forward by Mr. Christie. Authority was given the domain committee to proceed with the work. The treasurer reported that during May the receipts were: Rates £B9 3s lOd, rents i d fees £29 15s, licenses £2O. 15s, general £2 17s . 6d, total £142 Ils 4d.
