63 RUNS FOR FIVE WICKETS GAME AGAINST LANCASHIRE HOME TEAM COMPILES 176 By Teltgrsph—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, May 14-. The weather wag fine and the wicket in good order for the opening of the Australian cricketers’. match against Lancashire this morning. Lancashire won the toss and elected to bat. After Grimmett and Hornibrook had dismissed the strong Lancashire side for th; small total of 176 on a good wicket the Australian batsmen were themselves mowed down and are by no means in a happy position. Grimmett maintained his success in y breaking up dangerous partnerships, for when 38 had been scored after an hour, Grimmett had Hallows caught. Grimmett, - who has played in all five matches, was bowling splendidly. He dismissed E. Tyldesley, Iddon, Hopwood .nd Paynter in quick succession. Un--doubtedly f!i« batsmen were terrorstricken and afraid to use their feet to>the slow bowler. Hornibrook broke Grimmett’s run of 15 consecutive wickets by bowling Watson. Eckersley hit courageously and, together with Sibbles, scored freely. Grimmett at this stage was resting after two hours at the crease. Eckersley went out in attempting to hit Hornibrook. The 'others failed to last and the innings closed after 225 minutes. Grimmett bowled 32 overs, 13 of which were maidens.
McDonald started at a great pace, while gibblcs kept the batsmen on tho defensive. Woodfull was clean bowled for the third time in England. Bradman started prettily, but there was a sensation when his leg stump was 'sent flying. Richardson gave an easy catch and Walker went out during the last over of the day. The Australian Press correspondent says that each match gives a poorer impression of the Australian bowling, with the exception of Grimmett. Critics are asking what- is going to happen when the veteran is given his already overdue rest. Fairfax and Hornibrook so far are unable to maintain a good length, while a’Beekett and Hurwood do not look dangerous. The Australians’ amazing collapse was due partly to the great bowling of McDonald and Tyldesley. The scores are: — LANCASHIRE. First Innings.
