WELCOME TO KIMURA SAN

CONCERT IN Y.W.C.A. HALL. The Y.W.C.A. hall, New Plymouth, was filled with New Plymouth people and a few visitors last night when a concert was given as a welcome to Yuki Kimura San, a Japanese visitor at present passing through New Z°a*and. lhe excellent programme was thoroughly enjoyed. “The bumida Rivi.r ’ was a short 16th eentury emotional play de monstrating the love of a mother for her son and showing the martyrdom’ the mother, undertook to find her kidnapped child. A background of girls of the Tiki Group in eastern costume, who joined in the various choruses, showed up the central figures, also in costume, to great advantage. The characters were: Ferryman, Olwyn Griffiths; traveller, Joan Harvey; mother, Joan Carter; child, Marjory Harvey. An Irish song and dance was presented by the Whakatu Club, the soloist being Noeline Barnard and the dancer Miss Abraham. The Club girls, dressed in white with green shamrock leaves in front, sang the choruses. It was cleverly done, the difficult dance being well executed. The next item was of a novel nature, being given, as was explained, with the idea of giving the visitor a souvenir “not to take away in your pocket, but in your memory.” Different New Zealand industries and an important institution in the life f the community were portrayed, the flax l and dairying industries and the work of the Blanket Society being chosen. Babies, including a “latest model,” were placed upon the stage and a description of the feeding and clothing given. A team of girls led by Mr. Atua gave a Maori welcome in the form of a haka which was particularly stirring, the team being recalled. A humorous play presented by the Mahiteka Group concluded the programme, players taking part being Mr. Proper, Jean Girling; Miss Fruit, Dorothy Childcrstone; woman, Nancy Gardiner; girl, Nancy Whitehead; boy, Ethel Frcthey; office boy, Freda: Deo. 1
