THE KING'S STAMPS
AUSTRALIAN COLLECTION. ABOUT £2OOO PAID. An important collection of Australian postage stamp i has been bought in Melbourne on behalf of the King for a sum s .id to be about £2OOO. - " The latest addition to the Royal collection of stamps of the British Empire is a notable example of specialism as applied to stamps of relatively recent origin. Assembled within the last few years by a young barrister, Mr. J. R. W, Purves, it gained the highest award in its class, a gold medal, on the first and. only occasion that it was exhibited in public, at the International Philatelic Exhibition, at Melbourne, in October, 1928. It contains some thousands of specimens arranged in 19 volumes, every page of which is carefully annotated so as to present a compete historical and philatelic record of the Australian postal issues under the Federal Government, Many of the items, are quite unique, and, in addition to the normal stamps, there is a range of proofs, essays, and colour trials which cannot be duplicated. Mr. Purves, who is a prominent member of the Philatelic Society of Victoria and editor of its journal, now proposes to concentrate his attention upon' tho stamps of that State issued nfteryloyOy on which he is recognised authority.
