TERRIFIC CRASH

MOTOR-BUSES COLLIDE. ■ SIXTEEN PERSONS INJURED. Two powerful motor-buses crashed into each other with terrific force at the intersection of two streets at Marrickville, Sydney on April 17. Pedestrians who' witnessed the accident were appalled by its suddenness and its severity. One spectator fainted. ' A bus bound from Sydenham to Sydney and driven by Henry J. Brian had just reached the corner when the driver apparently realised that it was inevitable that ho would collide with a bus driven by Robert Galvin en route from the city to Belmore, which had reached the same crossing a very dangerous intersection. Brian swerved desperately, but .his machine crashed iu.to the side of the other, crushing it inwards. He was flung headlong from his compartment, and one of the rear wheels of the other bus went within inches of his head. The bus, now without a driver, turned completely round. It seemed to gather speed, and those of the passengers who had not been flung from their seats scrambled frantically towards the exits. The next instant the bus crashed into the Ajax garage. Ida Cartnell, a “bowser girl,” sprang aside, and the machine just missed her as it lurched into the garage wall There was a rending crash an the wall collapsed. Brickfl° rained down on the top of the bus, but the roof was stout enough to protect the passengers from injury from this new danger. The scene after the accident was a remarkable one. Passengers scrambled hysterically from the damaged vehicles. Women, with blood-bespattered faces, forgot their own injuries while they rescued their, own and other. people's Children.
