WILEY CUP MATCH.
WHANGAMOMONA ROAD’S WIN.
In perfect weather Whangamomona Road defeated Whangamomona by eight points to six _in a Wiley Cup Rugby match on Saturday. The gauie was & spirited one and the veterans in the Whangamomona Road team played with great dash. B. O’Dea staged a come-back with his goal kicking and proved an asset to his side. Whangamomona kicked off against the sun and fast play resulted in many penalties on both sides before a good run by O’Dea enabled Whangamomona Road to pentrate deeply into Whangamomona territory. A penalty kick cleared and Whangamomona’s pack kept right on the ball and carried it over'the'line, Whangamomona Road forcing. Another attack sent, the ball over the dead ball line. Whangamomona Road were kept on the defensive until an infringement allowed them to clear, and R. Callaghan followed up well, but was tackled. Whangamomona made the pace in a rush which ended in Whangamomona Road forcing. A lucky try was scored by Dalbeth when the ball bounded right into his arms with a clear field ahead. R. Cleland’s kick went wide. A good kick by E. Callaghan gained ground and R. Callaghan carried the ball further, but kicked too hard, Whangamomona forcing. Good kicking by VYhangamomona reversed the position, but Scrambling play resulted, in two scrums at five yards, Whangamomona again attacked, strongly and caused two forces in quick succession. Off-side play spoiled a good passing rush by Whangamomona, and the Road team warmed up, but Rice knocked oil. Whangamomona were successful in keeping the attack out ’'although a. Callaghan and J. O’Dea combined and almost crossed. B. O’Dea was forced out by Dalbeth when a score looked certain. A moment later .Whangamomona infringed and B. O’Dea kicked a penalty goal from a sharp angle. Half time came with the score 3 all. . In' the second, spell Whangamomona did most of the attacking. A. mark by Hight was hard to justify-as he might have scored. Whangamomona Road, forced before starting a good movement, which broke* up through R. Cleland knocking on when attempting to intercept. A pretty try was scored by R. Callaghan. Out of a scramble he slipped, round and gathered up quickly, crossing in a good position. B. O’Dea kicked a goal. Whangamomona attacked, but good tackling held them up, and a fumbled pass stayed a fast movement among the backs. After forcing Whangamomona Road cleared, but K. Anderson secured and penetrated beyond the twenty-five, K. Summerhays saving with a good line kick. Another attack by Whangamomona was’stopped by T. Callaghan, wh > kicked into touch at halfwa,. A forward pass' stopped what might have been a try for Whangamomona Road and Whangamomona instituted a rush,, which caught Whangamomona Road napping. Callaghan was unable to get in his clearing kick and shot a forward pass to O’Dea. For the infringement a free kick was awarded 'Whangamomona and R. Cleland landed a goal. Whangamomona tried hard to even up the poizts, a penalty kick by Cleland just failing. Mr. Gus Murphy was referee.
