ROBBERY WITH VIOLENCE

INTOXICATED MAN ATTACKED.

By Telegraph.-—Press Association.

Christchurch, May 12.

Walter Fraser Sheriffs Harneiss, alias William Fraser, and James Burman, for assault with intent to rob, were each sentenced to four years’ imprisonment. Counsel for the defence said that in view of their record he found it hard to say anything to influence the court in their favour.

Mr. Justice Blair said there was a time when robbery with violence was always punished by hanging. Prisoners had got hold of a half-drunken man and throttled him and attempted to rob him. Harneiss had been sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment for a similar offence in Christchurch in 1923.
