Numerous casualties and widespread damage have been caused by earthquakes in the Azerbaijan district, Persia. The shocks were most severe at Salmas, which was almost entirely destroyed, the new quarter of the town suffering extensively. It is reported that 2000 were killed and 500 injured in the district.

Many tremors were felt at Tabriz, culminating on Friday in a terrible earthquake lasting one and a half minutes. The panic-stricken population fled and took refuge in the hills to the southward, where they are eamping. The town is deserted. The Shah has given £2OOO to the relief fund.
