Captain Francis, a Guardsman who, in accordance with a tradition of the regiment, resigned because me married an actress, was a guest with Mrs. Francis a't the Criterion, New Plymouth, on Saturday. Colonel Selwyn King (Sydney), Mr. McKenzie (Wellington), Mr. S. M. Noscrip (Gisborne), Mr. and Mrs. Hcinzman (Christchurch), Mr. H. Langdcn (Sydney), Mr. G. C. Julian (Auckland), Mr. W. W. Mason and Mr. L. D. Keedwell (Wellington) are amongst the guests at the Criterion Hotel. A motion of condolence with the relatives of the late Mr. David Alexander was passed at a meeting of the executive of the. North Taranaki Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs on Saturday morning. Mr. A. E. Washer (chairman) said the club had lost one of its keenest and most capable judges and a man of great character. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect.

Mr. N. R. McKenzie, senior inspector of schools in Taranaki, left on Saturday for Wellington, where he will attend the conference of the Australasian Association of psychology and Philosophy. A large number of university professors and leading educationists from Australia and New Zealand are to attend. Mr. McKenzie will address them on “A modern survey of an education district.” The death has occurred at the age of 74 years of Mr. Charles Edmund Galwey, an old resident of Wellington and one well known in the Public Service some years ago. He arrivejl in New Zealand from the North of Ireland in 1876 and was first employed as an extra clerk in the House of Representatives. Subsequently he. joined the Public Works Department as a draughtsman and assistant surveyor, and was located at different times on the West Coast, in Canterbury, Wanganui and Taranaki, as well as at the head office, Wellington. In 1889 Mr. Galwey joined the staff of the Government Insurance Department and was appointed chief computer in the acturial branch of the department in 1913. This position he held until 1917, when he was appointed actuary to the National Provident Fund and Friendly Societies Department. He retired from the service in 1921.

The death occurred at Auckland on Thursday of the Rev. Alexander MaeLean in his 81st year. Although Mr. Mac Lean was forced to retire from the active ministry some years ago through loss of his sight, he was well known in Auckland, particularly in Avondale, where he was minister for 15 years. Mr. Mac Lean was born in Ross-shire, Scotland. After obtaining his degree in the United States he came to New Zealand in 1881. His first charge was at Waipu, where ministered to the Scottish settlers, preaching in the Gaelic language. From Waipu he went to Hawera and while there. married Miss Evangeline Wells, a daughter of the late Mr. Benjamin Wells. Mr. Wells was a member of a well-known New Plymouth family. Leaving Hawera in 1891, Mr. Mac Lean continued his ministry in the United States for five years, returning in 1896 to become minister of the Presbyterian Church at Avondale. Mr. Mac Lean is survived, by his wife, four sons a nd; two daughters.
