LARGE FIELDS; FINE RACING

TOTALISATOR SHOWS INCREASE

Even with the firsit day’s form to guide them 'the public were seriously thinking all day. Only one winner m Bent out favourite. Consequently dividends were mostly of a good size—in the last two events. they went' ■ inlto double figures. So accurately had the handicapper gauged the merits of the fields that finishes were. mostly very ©lose, giving the judge, Mr. W. P. RusBe.ll, an unenviable task. Fields were large but they were despatched on even terms, by Starter C. O’Connor, and with the track in excellent condition some fast times were recorded. . The fine weather and prospect of good racing attracted a large attendance. The public were in speculative mood, the Itotalisator investments showing a slight Increase. The totalisator staff handled £18,340 lOs, an increase of £l7’2 10s as compared with itihe second day last year. The to-tal for the meeting was £36,378 10s, as compared-with £36,115 10s l aB t year, an increase of £263. In the Davidson Handicap <Sdvermme Was a hot favourite, but after Just The Swell, Ruanui and Yoma mid. made all the running the little fancied Chopin came faslt over the last couple of furlongs to beat The Swell by a nose ■with Mountain Heath close up thud and Just So fourth. The open sprint, the Mokoia Handicap, saw a warm favourite in Ladv Quex, well ridden by H.. Gray, score from a field of eleven. Benzora and Te Atiawa made the early running with Lady Quex always handy, and in the run home Gray brought the favourjibe along to win by a good length' from the Strafford-owned Hopwood, with Melissa third and Llanore close up field of eight for the Adamson Steeplechase Airtight was made curite, but the Hawera horse ran third, to Aurora Borealis and Diana s Laa. There were a couple of spills in the steeplechase, Maidos and Maunga losing their riders, but neither L.-Dulieu nor C. Stratton received any There was a meeting of the judicial (committee to inquire into , a misunderstanding over the engagement of a rider, Trainer C. Jackson stating 'that Hl, Gray had engaged to ride Benzora eacit day, whereas the jockey was under .the impression that the engagement referred to the first day only. The cpmnut- ' teo held that Gray was free to ride Lady Quex. The musical .programme rendered by Mrs. Quin’s orchestra added to the pleasure of the afternoon. DETAILS OF THE. RACING. THE RACING DESCRIBED.

PAIKO .NEARLY ALL , THE WAY.

the money next time out. Hopwood showed his beet form for a long time, and where the class is not so strong he will break the ice. ■ Melissa missed the jump out and finished in rare fashion. She was very unlucky and will soon make amends. Llanore went well, blit Atholspear is ...the most likely one to be found among the early winners. He was very unlucky and could not find an opening in the straight. The hard tracks beat Benzora, but he will do better later on.

BLUE PAPER LET PUBLIC DOWN.

The public could see nothing but Blue Paper in. the Shorts Handicap, backing her down to a bare even money prospect, and she carried twice as much as the second fancy, Winacre. Valstreet delayed the start, but when the tapes went up he got away well, Bon Eve, on the rails, being first to move. The field bunched 1 going oh to the bend and Blue*Paper rushed through to lead Rule Britannia, .Winacre, Patearoa and Valstreet across the top. Into the straight the favourite had a cominanding lead of two lengths, but she collapsed like a pricked bubble. and Valstreet shot past her to win by two lengths, from Patearoa, who came from the ruck to secure second money, a. length and a half ahead of Blue Paper.. Rule Britannia .was a fair fourth, with Annoyer, Winacre,-Mo'atoa arid’ Ngawhine next. , Valstreet’s performance was a good one, as he had taken a lot but of himself at the start. : He was fortunate in getting away well, but-judging by the' manner in which he finished he should win more races. Patearoa again went well after getting none the best of the start. Blue-Paper stopped quickly in the straight. . Annoyed struck trouble in the straight or he might have been in a place. ;

(By “Moturoa.”)

■ Royal Finance- ( £5OB 10s) was backed .down to even money in the Ngamutu Handicap, .with a drop., of £250 t<L Statuary, pa tear qa and Paiko. Royal Finance and Anbridge .gave trouble at the etart, and when the . tapes went up Anbridge and Gueress, were badly left, patearoa being actually ■ first to move, but Paiko;- who,' drew. the- inner, shot up info? the,, lead from Patearoa, Gowanlea, Calamine, Royal finance, Tentcall and' Ben Hur. ’’ Across the" top Paiko had dratvn clear ,of-' Gbwahlea, -Tentoall, Patearoa,' Royal-Finance, Ben. Hur and Calamine. Tentcall'looked to. have/ a chance corning' into the 'straight, where the favourite' <wae in a ■ bad position on the rails, but it was 5 Patearoa who made the) flrat" move and he challenged at the distances. Gtrrahd,: however, plied the : flail vigorously over the' last halffurlong. and Paiko. was going as well as.anything at the finish to win by ft. good neck.- Royal Finance was coming fast- into, third place half a length away, and. then -followed Tentcall, Ben Hur, Adventufl, ' Gbwahlea, Statuary and Gueress. $ -■ ' ‘ Paiko. won ' well after missing the jump oiit'arid’finished well under pressure. " Patearoa is' coming back to form and will win. in weaker .'company. Royal Finance was in a bad position throughout, but was unlucky, and she will make amends before long. Of those behind the placed horses, most improvement can be looked- for in Ben Hur and Statuary, the latter especially appealing as an early winner. ROYAL ACRE WINS AT LAST. ' AU lined up for the Mariawapou Hurdles, and Glen.star. (£573 10s) was a hot favourite, but there was a big backing for Royal Acre, who scored a popular though overdue win. Whisogne, Glenstar and Air Force all moved off well, and passing the stands Air Force, Glens tar and Wliisogne were oh terms, with three lengths to Royal Acre and Oalithe, Whenuanui being last. Whisogne shot up to the lead at the six furlongs and had a break of three lengths on Air Force, while Glenstar hud been steadied and Royal Acre came along fast. Half a mile from home Royal Acre had actually taken charge, and he led across the top 'from Air Force and Whisogne, with Whenuanui and Glenstar next. Dulieu caught the others.napping when he put on a break of three lengths on Glenstar approaching the. straight, and the Acre gelding was in an unassailable position over the last jump. Glenstar made a big effort, but failed to bridge the gap, and Royal Acre won by a length and a half. Air Force was five lengths away, with Whisogne, Whenuanui and Vivo following.' Different tactics were adopted on Royal Acre and his pilot slipped the field at the right moment. The gelding is very well at present and carries weight well. Glenstar. was all over the shop and if he had been kept within striking distance of Royal . Acre he would have set the winner a more difficult task. Air Force ran a solid race but was outclassed, and the rise in weight stopped Whenuanui.

FAVOURITES ARE BADLY BEATEN

Ail went out for the Davidson Handicap, and Silvermine (£9lO 10s) and Ruanui. (£526) carried practically half of the investments. Another surprise was due to the punters when the “hot pots” failed to -get' near the money. Monsogne missed the barrier riso and The Swell and Just So were first to I move, Just So leading out of the | straight from The Swell, Yoma, Silvermine, Break o’ Day, Ruanui and Chopin. Down the back Just So was clear of The Swell and Yoma together, Silvermine, Chopin and Break 'o’ Day were in the next bunch, and Ruanui arid Hipo next. The pace-maker increased her lead to two lengths going on to the bend, with The Swell and Ruanui handy and Yoma and Silvermine next. Silvermine appeared to be. making hard work of it at this stage and Just So led into the straight, just in front of The Swell, Yoma, Ruanui and Chopin coming fast on the outside. The Swell was in front at the distance, but Chopin joined him and this pair singled themselves out in the run to the judge. In a desperate finish Chopin was ridden flat out to win by a nose. Mountain Heath finished fast into third place two lengths away, just beating Just So for the minor money. Then came Ruanui, Yoma. Manly and Silvermine. Chopin was a smart hack and this was his initial win in open company. Judging by the way he accounted for this, really good field the Lord Quex four-year-old will win a lot more races. The Swell had the best of the running, but . -wag beaten on- its merits. Mountain Heath showed a big improvement on his form of the first day, finishing on remarkably well. Just So made a good showing for her first essay at a distance and promises to. develop into a smart miler. Ruanui failed badly, but he will do better. Silvermine was well placed in the early stages, but he was scratching three furlongs from home and ran far below form. LATAKIA FROM END TO END. Seventeen started in the Borough Handicap, and in a big pool opinions were divided between Goldlike ( £566) and Merry Melody ( £539), while Latakia was at a substantial price. Rossferry dwelt slightly when the tapes went up and Latakia moved off smarter, to be clear of Brilliant Light, Potoleer, Ro&s ferry, Remora, Joyspear and Masher. At the half-mile Latakia was bowling along in great style two lengths ahead of Potoleer, Remora, Brilliant Light,' Rossferry, Joyspear, Merry Melody, Goldlike, and Werata. Except that Brilliant Light and Werata were improving their positions, there was no alterations into the straight, and once headed for the judge Joyspear challenged the leader. At the distance Brilliant Light and Werata were coming fast, but Green rode a vigorous race on Latakia to bring him home a head in front of Werata. Joyspear and Brilliant Light were together a length away and Goldlike, Crennatown and Auctioneer right up. Latakia did not go well from behind on Thursday, but Green hopped him out smartly and so missed all the crowding on the bends. He hung on well at the finish and ran good time for .a hack. Werata was a long way back in the early stages and better placed would certainly have won. He is worth keeping in mind for Wanganui. Joyspear was again unlucky, but his turn will come. Brilliant Light had every chance but Goldlike was nearly knocked over the rails at the six furlong peg.. He struck trouble again in the straight arid was one of the unluckieat horses in the race. Crennatown, as usual, did not begin with the first bunch and was not flighted until half-way up the straight. He was running over everything at the finish, and when this maiden learns to get out; from the tapes he will win good races.

CHANGE OF RIDERS BENEFICIAL. After being saddled up Birkbeck was withdrawn from the Adamson Steeplechase, and the public again went hot and strong for Airtight, entrusting him with £597, with a drop of over £250 to Waitaunaha and Aurora Borealis. Maidos at once went to the front from Waitaunaha, Diana’s Lad and Democratic, but the. leader dipped at the hencoop and dislodged his pilot, leaving Waitaunaha to pilot Democratic, Airtight, Diana’s Lad and Aurora Borealis. On the far bend Maunga fenced in his usual erratic style a,nd crashed, and at the sis furlongs Airtight went up to Waitaunaha, and this pair were followed • down the back by Democratic, Diana’s Lad and Aurora Borealis. The last-named made a forward move .-approaching the sod wall, and Airtight, Diana’s Lad and Aurora Borealis took this obstacle together. Airtight was beaten a quarter of a mile from home, and Aurora Borealis jumped clear of Diana’s La'd at the last fence, winning with something in hand by two lengths and a half. Airtight was six lengths away, with Waitaunaha next, and Democratic and Brigadier Bill followed half a furlong further back. A change of riders had a beneficial effect-on Aurora Borealis, who was ridren at her fences with confidence. ■ She was a winner half a mile from home, and judging by her display will go a lontr way. Diana’s Lad ran an honest race and will improve on this effort. Airtight and‘Waitaunaha were outelacsed, and Brigadier Bill ran as if the race on Thursday had affected him. LADY QUEX IS FINELY HANDLED. Ridgemount dropped out of the Mokoia Handicap and a heavy run on closing time sent 1 Lady Quex out a warm favourite, the mare carrying £744 10s, againstthe.. £52'5 entrusted to Atholspear. When the tapes went up Kiosk jumped back and Atholspear was first to break the line on the outside of the field. However, at the end of a furlong To Atiawa was making play from Benzora, Melissa, Lady Quex, Gold Dawn and Hopwood, while Atholspear had drifted to the tail of the bunch. Benzora joined To Atiawa crossing the top and' approaching the straight this pair were a length and a half ahead of Lady Quex, Llanore and Hopwood. Lady Quex sailed past the leaders at the bottom of the straight, but Hopwood, Llanore and further on Melissa came out of the clouds. Over the last half furlong the favourite asserted her superiority. and when Gray shook her up she drew out to win by a good length from Hopwood, while the fast-finishing Melissa failed to get into the dividends by a head. Llanore, Atholspear and Te Atiawa were together right up, and then came Gold Dawn, Benzora and Town Bird.
