Rec. 10.30 p.m. Melbourne, May 8. The Unemployment Relief Bill was read a second time in the Assembly.
The Bill provides for the imposition of a stamp tax on wages of one penny in the £1 per week on all incomes up to £312 a year, and for a supertax on a sliding scale on all incomes between £312 and £5OO a year. Thus persons receiving £5OO a year will pay 50s a year; those earning £7OO will pay 84s; £lOOO, £7; £l5OO, £l5; £2OOO, £24;. £3OOO, £39. This will be in addition to ordinary income tax. The Bill will operate for 12 months.
