LAND OF OPPORTUNITY
DOMINION’S GREAT FUTURE.
ADDRESS BY GOVERNOR-GEN ER AL.
An informal visit to King's €*o)lege was paid 1 y he Governor-Genera), Lord Bledisole, and Lady Bledisloe on Tuesday, when ’they made a brief inspection of the school and chapel. His Excellency aiso gave a short address to the boys. "I had the privilege of seeing the very beautiful memorial that you, your parents and youi i old boys have raised to the memory of those who went to fight for the freedom of the world and all that the British Empire means,” said His Excellency. “They died for New Zealand and the British Empire. You were not, and are unlikely to be, called on to make that greatest of all sacrifices, but if they died for the Dominion and the Empire it is up to you to live for them. The work you are doing here is to enable you to live the best possible lives.
j “Why I am impressing this point is because New Zealand is, beyond all other countries in the British Empire, a land oi opportunity. If there is one country ! beyond all others that is bound to make history, to produce great men and women, and to be prosperous, subject to one condition, it is New Zealand. That one condition is that the men and women should be fit to shoulder their tasks —ip other words, should be . suitably trained in body and mind to make New. Zealand what it is destined to. be. “The burden of responsibility on yoi.x hoys licre in King’s College is'very great I .' You have the opportunity and are receiving one of the best educations the country can give yon. We have our rights, but we have also our responsibilities and it is not on the assertion of our rights but on the execution ol our duties that success and happiness for ourselves and the position of our country depend.” In conclusion the Governor-General urged the continuance of the team spirit in after-life. .The great secret of the success of the Empire had been that public schoolboys had learned to play the game, not for themselves but for the side.
