MAIN TRUNK COLLISION
EXPRESS STRIKES GOODS TRAIN,
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Mercer, Last Night. The Main Trunk express struck the rear of a goods train just south of Mercer at 5.15 a.m. to-day, resulting in the blocking of the line for four hours. Two waggons were wrecked and others were badly damaged, but the guard’s van, which had to take the full force of the, impact, escaped with minor damage.. Two cases of fish on the rear platform were not even moved out of position. Boch trains were in the cutting at the approach to the tunnel near the yard and were travelling slowly in a heavy fog. The slower train was a through goods train from Wellington, due at Mercer at 3.30 a.m., but owing to delays it was nearly two hours overdue and, after awaiting the signal to enter the station while the yard was cleared of a special to Auckland, the goods train was moving slowly into Mercer when the impact " occurred. Passengers scarcely noticed the collision.
