INGLEWOOD COUNTY

CONDITION OF THE ROADS. MONTHLY WUNCIL MEETING. The Inglewood County Council met yesterday, the cliairman, Mr. A. Corkill, presiding. There- were also present Messrs. A. E. Cowley, J. Stachurski, H. Jones, D. A. Brown, J. Grieve, W. N. Willans, J. Hunter and R. Stuart. The Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. J. G. Cobbe), for the chairman of the Town Planning Board, forwarded particulars of the public inquiry on behalf of the Town Planning Board at New Plymouth on May 22. He asked for the representation of the council.

Mr. Corkill said that the council could do no better than leave the matter in the hands of Mr. Keller and .representatives of other local bodies, who knew more about what was required than the Inglevyood councillors. . The clerk of the; New Zealand Conn-, ties’ Association advised that a conference .of county delegates would be. held in 'Wellington on July 2. Mr. Corkill was appointed to represent the council.

One of the council’s contractors,' Mr. F. Coldrick, wrote asking for a.larger allowance than 3d per yard as Compensation for the worn condition of the jaws of the crusher at Bedford Road.

It was decided that it was not worth while wasting further money on the erus’her and that the 3d stand.

A letter was received from Mr. M. J. Kara!us, who asked permission to shift his fence on Salisbury Road in order to deal with the weeds on his frontage. Mr. R: Zimmerman, Upland Road, sought similar permission. The council assented to both requests. Permission was sought by Mr. V. D. Gush, Upland Road, to remove his rail fence 10 feet outward to enable the easier clearing of ragwort and blackberry. Mr. Gush also asked that the new metal on the Upland-Bcdford Road De' Tolled as early as possible for lie would be carting cicarii and manures oyer the road, in the near future and thought it would improve thp roiyd if it remained in its present condition. ' Mr. C. F.' Dowsbtt, consulting engineer, stated in his report that this road yvas awaiting the final work of rolling and blinding. It was decided to hasten the completion of the contract. The consulting engineer reported:— The progress of the Pukeho filling has been delayed owing to broken weather and broken promises. The filling is practically completed, the old gravel being replaced upon the filling and covered with a proportion of new gravel. This work is now almost completed. The boulder supply contract has been completed, the crushing amounting to 1783 cubic yards net. The Junction Road fix. Bathurst’s Flat to Kaimata, a distance of about 200 chains, has been scarified, strengthened and rolled, and in addition portions of the crushing have been reserved for building np the edges of the bitumen and supplying chips were required. The Bedford-Upland Road formation and metal contract is awaiting the final work of rolling and blinding and for this purpose the Austin roller. should be made available.

The formation, eulverting and metalling of Bedford Road south of 'Norfolk Road are already completed and the rolling and 'blinding should follow similar work on the Upland Road. Works requiring early attention are tarring Tariki culvert, Dudley Road metalling and Atkinson’s culvert. The work on the Everett, Wortlcy and York Roads has been finally approved. The ranger reported that ho had been over most of the roads in the county and had found them fairly free from wandering' stock. In some eases pigs were again making their appearance on the roads and the owners had been notified. More work in cleaning up road frontages had been done than for some time past. The overseer, Mr. G. Barrack, reported oh : road maintenance "work throughout the county. Mr. Dowsett was a.sked to inspect the Tarata zig-zag and report on the amount of crushed metal required to do the necessary work. Owing to the date of the next meeting coinciding with that of the King’s Birthday, it was decided to meet on June 10.
