ELTHAM SCHOOL PROGRESS GOOD ORDER OF GROUNDS. : DENTAL WORK INCREASES. The chairman of the Eltham school committee, Mr. W. Ricketts,' submitted the following report to the annual meeting:—. “All buildings are in good repair. The grounds are in good order and the general appearance is equal to any in Taranaki. Since last annual meeting a new fence lias been erected in front of the main school. “The heating system in the main school has been unsatisfactory ever since it was installed. Representations have ben made to the Education Board to have an® efficient system installed but the department holds out the existing regulation that it cannot be responsible for more than one-third of the cost of installing improved heating systems. “The baths were open to the public from the beginning of December to the beginning of April and were well patronised considering it was not a good swimming season. During the season a carnival was arranged by the baths committee and Messrs. Murray and Osborne, the result being a profit of £6 7s 6d with' which it is proposed to concrete the dressing sheds. ‘At last meeting of the committee the Rev. W. W. Avery resigned as he was leaving the district. • The vacancy was not filled. Daring .the year dental work has been, carried on at the clinic and children up to standard 111. are receiving treatment. Since last annual mreting a “C” type clinic has been., erected at Manaia. and) the children from Auroa, Kapiini and Okaiawa are being treated there, instead of travelling to Eltham. This will neces-, sitate the nurse’s absence frOti Eltham for three or four months each year until there is sufficient work to keep a nurse fully occupied in Eltham. “The number receiving treatment at Eltham is 350. and 186 new patients have not yet been examined, 251 have been treated at Manaia, making a total of 787 as against 348 last year. The nurse was . at . Manaia for four months until April 22, and an assistant nurse has commenced duty in order to bring the work up-to-date. This arrangement is only temporary. ■ /‘The children’s ball in August proved very successful. The annual picnic was held -..t Ngamcii', between 600 and 700 children and adults taking advantage of the excursion. . t ‘The capitation received during the. year, according to scale was £149 and in addition the, Education Board made a special grant of £22, a total of £l7l. Expenditure Was:, Cleaning cost £143 7s Gd, heating £29 195.9 d, repairs £lB 13s 10d,.stationary £ll 3s 3d and miscellaneous'£7 17s lid, a total of £2lO 12s 3d. The committee has had. to raise a considerable sum locally to meet the deficit in the general'account and in addition provide for baths, entertainments, library, dental and other incidentals before considering improvements. ‘The average .'attendances for. the year were 391.8, 159 children being admitted and 1'32 withdrawn." The following committee was elected: W. Richards, chairman; A. R. Kemp,: secretary and treasurer: J. Phillips, junr., A. E. Benefield, .0. C. Stauners, T. F. Trask, A. Ware, B. H. Goldsmith and Rev. J, A. Rytiurn. NORMANBY. ROLL LOWER.' ' ' ') SCHOOL ORCHESTRA PROPOSED. At Normanby Mr. A. E, Spratt pre-, sided over a fair attendance, . Through work done voluntarily by the committee and parents on the school' grounds the committee was enabled to forward £l5 o'f.its quota of £22 to the new dental clinic, stated the annual report,of.the chairman of the Normanby school. committee. During the year a silver cup and £1 cash prize had been won at St; Mary’s flower, show, and the school , had displayed handwork, at the Normaniby show. A euchre tournament had resulted in a profit of £l4 10s. lie regretted that the roll number had dropped considerably and that there, would therefore be a- large drop in capitation. This would be a consideration, for the. incoming committee, as there was .an extra room to clean and heat during the winter months. He suggested that the committee should consider the 'formation of an orchestra. . The election resulted in the return of A. E. Spratt (chairman), E. Peach (secretary), T. Pickering, T.. Evans, H. Somers, P. Linn, W. McCaffery. : Support was accorded the School Committee Association’s request for an increase in the capitation grant. ■■ SUCCESSES AT OKAIAWA. ' RETIREMENT OF MR.- A. LEES. • Mr A*.- Lees presided over a small attendance at Okaiawa. ' “Steady'progress has been maintained throughout the year, the inspector's annual report bearing ample testimony to the efficient work carried out in school work generally," stated the annual report of the Okaiawa school committee. “Outside activities also have, not been neglected, and the practical side. 'of agriculture and forestry, has received , the close attention these subjects deserve in a rural community. instruction in its various aspects has also received due attention, and ..swimming in particular might be singled out as having been very successfully carried out, with the result that a number of pupils qualified for certificates. “During the year an endeavour has been made to have a more up-to-date heating system installed in the school. As the department’s regulations make the committee responsible for one-third of the cost an appeal had to be made to parents to provide funds. The liberal response, together with funds in hand, has assured the committee’s proportion, and it is hoped to have this very necessary work carried out shortly by the Education Board. The school library has been added to, this being made possible by the school children’s contributions, together with subsidies received cn them. Mrs. A. Taylor, who was infant mistress for a number of years, resigned, and Miss Wallis was appointed in her stead. Miss E. Nairn finished her year’s course as probe tioner.” The committee expresses appreciation of the efficient work of the teachers. The election resulted in the return of J. Barclay (chairman), L. Houlahan
(secretary), J. A. Shearer, C. 8. Martin, W. G. Williams, A. Christiansen, and Carr. Votes of thanks were accorded the retiring committeemen, Messrs. A. Lees (who did not seek re-election), J. E. Mortimer and A. J. Fraser. TAWHITI SCHOOL’S YEAR. RECOGNITION OF SERVICES. Mr. E. W. Cate presided over a large attendance at Tawliiti. “The roll number at the beginning of the year was 192, at the end of the year 200, average roll 197, and the average attendance 188,” stated the annual report. “During the year a system of Bible instruction was introduced and is working satisfactorily. Funds for heating have been provided for and a system is to-be installed in the near future.
“Teams from the school took part in basketball, football and cricket. The •boys won the schools’ cricket competition. Thirteen pupils qualified for swimming certificates. Inspectors’ reports have been highly satisfactoiy and fleet credit on the headmaster and teaching staff. Of 17 pupils in standard six presented for examination 15 passed. “The year commenced with the sum of £3O. 19s 2d in the general account and £8 4s 10d in the special account. The board’s grants during the year totalled £9O 7s 6d. Expenditure, in the <'eneral account amounted to £9l 16s 5d and we concluded the year with a credit of £3O 14s. In the special account we received £23 14s 5d from the schooj. ball. £l5 lie from donations, and. £25 9s 5d from subsidies'. The expenditure was' £59. 14s Hd, leaving a credit of £l2 4s 9d. c “It will be seen from the foregoing, figures that the)grants from the board are barely sufficient for the upkeep of the' school and that-all-Work undertaken in the, school grounds must be paid for from'funds raised locally. The committee 'desires to express its appreciation of the good the headmaster and' the teaching staff.” ' ' ■ .. The election resulted: —G. Dick (chanman), L. E. Barltrop (secretary), W. H. McDonald, C. Coad, G. A. Duncan (reelected), F. Castle, H. Thrush. The retiring chairman declined nomination. Messrs. J. B. Laurenson and W. H. McDonald were accorded votes of thanks for their services during the past 10 years.h •RIVERLEA SCHOOL COMMITTEE; SUCCESSFUL YEAR RECORDED. The general tone of the school was distinctly good and the inspectors’ report very good. . ... , Commencing the year with a credit oi £2B 4s 9d, of which £l7 18s 10d stood to the credit of the general and £lO 5s J Id to the credit of the special account, they had closed with a credit of £26 Is lOd, of which' £l9 2s 2d was general account and £6 19s 8d special account, The receipts totalled £132 19s 3d, the chief items being capitation £34 15s, donations, etc., £44 0s 9d and subsidies £3 'lls. Miss M. I. Moreeiaft .had retired and Mr. H. R Harre who bad been Headmaster at Apiti, had been appointed to the position of head teacher. Mr?" Harre had proved a capable and popular teacher. An extremely successful picnic had' been heli during the year at Opunake,' when splendid weather . prevailed arid almost the whole ustnet attended. i ‘, i In the athletic arena the scaool had nothing to be ashamed of. Football, cricket and basketball teams showed promise.- The boys had played three cricket matches during the summer, defeating Auroa twice and being beaten by Eltham once. During the winter they had' won all foot! ill matches played, chiefly seven-a-side games. As there wa? sufficient materia 1 ., available this year it had been decided to enter the P ri / n^ r y schools’ competitions. In basketball the 'school had had a very strong team last year and would have a good one again this year. ■ j-x r « The plantations were a credit to the school and the two acres of trees were, ■doing well.
