Strong representations to the Whaka-mara-Mokoia section of tho South Taranaki Electric Power Board’s outer area to link with the board’s scheme were

made to a meeting of settlers at Mokoia lust night by Mr. J. B. Murdoch, chairman of the board. With him were Messrs. J. Houston, the board’s solicitor, T. R. Overton, engineer, and R. P. Baigent, secretary. Mr. L, F. Dell presided over an attendance of about 20.

In urging the district to consider his proposition Mr. Murdoch stressed the fact that during the period other boards were experiencing difficulties in maintaining supplies the South Taranaki board had ample power. He could assure those people in the outer area that they would not be burdened with any expenditure that had been incurred in the inner area. They really had an advantage over consumers in the inner area in that all they would be called upon to finance would be the cost of reticulation.

“I. can assure you there is no possibility of a rate being struck, as with its present number of consumers the board is making a handsome profit,” said Mr. Murdoch. He explained that if 25 per cent, of the ratepayers in any group petitioned the board would make a survey of the group. Other formalities would be gone through, the authority of the Loans Board obtained and then a poll of tho ratepayers taken for the raising of a loan. It needed a threefifths ajority to carry the loan.. If that procedure were adopted immediately he thought that by August, 1931, when tlie Government had promised to link up the board to the Mangahao and Waikarcmoana schemes, power would be switched on in the Whakamara-Mokoia districts.

In reply to a question by Mr. C. J. Hawkcn he explained that while the Wanganui-Rangitike - board could supply lighting at a cheaper rate the South Taranaki board could supply. cheaper power. He concluded by stating that the board was in a position to commence its survey of the district almost immediately. The majority of those present indicated 1’ it they, were prepared to 'ake the necessary steps to procure power as soon as possible.
