On Wednesday evening the members of the Womens Club .entertained .Mrs. Whiteman, R.A., Wanganui, at a very pleasant evening. Mrs. Whiteman talked on the works of an artist.

Miss A. Howard, Taumarunui, who has been the guest of Miss K. Coleman, returned home during the week.

Mrs. Coleman, who has been spending a few days in Wanganui, returned during . the week. -

Miss' M. Jackson, who for the -past eight years has been .accountant for the firrn‘6l" Johnson and Co., Hawera, leaves during the week .on a six months’ tour of the world. She was met by the staff of Johnston ami Co. and w:us farewelled, the manager, Mr. G. E. Meyrick, presenting her on behalf of the staff with a travelling rug.

After a "very good season the Hawera Tennis Club closed its courts on Saturday. The day being fine the membeis to have their last few games this season. Those present were: M* sfl Hair Miss Meryick, Miss Moginie, Mrs. McQuin, Miss S. Huggins, Miss E. Uoll, Miss W. Higgins, Miss Murray, Miss M. Bachlor, Miss D. Huggins and others.

The Manaia Ladies’ Basketball Club held a very successful social and dance at the Oddfellows’ Hall, Manaia; on Wednesday night. There was a good attendance and the function proved a financial success. Miss B. Bridge ' and M. Guy were the pianists. Good service was rendered by the secretaries, Misses M. Hansen and M. Howell, and a committee of ladies under the direction of Mrs. Bridge dispensed supper. '# # j ■

The official opening of the Opunake golf links took place on Saturday, when, a mixed foursome was played. Although the greens were not up to stand-, aid' some good scores were recorded. The competition was won by Miss I. LewM .and F. Julian, while Mrs. Hickey and; B. Dudley were second. Afternoon tea. was dispensed by the lady members, after which the president (Mr. E. O. Edmonds) declared the links open. He wished all members a successful season,, and welcomed the new members. Mrs. Edmonds drove the first ball.

Miss Dorn, late of Otakelio and Jnaha, is staying with Air. and Mrs. Lyndon.

Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Davies have returned from a-motor trip to Auckland and Tauranga. The Auroa hockey dance held on Tuesday proved most successful, and Miss N. Lyndon( honorary secretary) and her energetic committee are to be congratulated on their achievements. There was a large attendance. Wills’ Melody Makers’ Orchestra supplied capital music. The winners of the novelty dances were: Spot waltz, Mr. F. Gargon and Miss Brent; Monte Carlo waltz, Mr. Monitor and.' Miss I. Campbell. , Tiie. hali (was decoratcil with green and white, s.trehmers and baskets of flowers. The k,cwpie dance, was won by Mr.i B, Bradford and partner.

RANGERS THIRD BIRTHDAY

The Hawera Rangcre celebrated their third birthday wth a party on Wednesday. They met their gueists at 6.30 p.in. in the club room, wliieh wae artistically decorated, the ceiling being draped in red, white and blue streamers to form a Union Jack, while the walls were gay with postern, flowers and greenery. The first half hour was spent in discussing, without words, pork and beans with tomato sauce, apple tart, cream and fruit jelly, and conversation in actual words was limited to requests for the transportation of the various edibles. Then each person was issued with a paper hat, a bottle of “pop” land a straw, i.

After tea service stars were presented by Mrs. H. T. Lovell to the following: . Acting Captain Miss Mary Quin, Acting Lieutenant Dorothy. Hopper,.Patrol- < leaders '.Patricia Lennon and Dorpthy--'Clement,' Rangers Ellen Hunt, Mavis McDonald and Florrie Burge. Games, competitions and camp-fire songs whiled away a merry evening and three items were rendered collectively .by the Rangers. A skit pn. the.movies,.entitled “Broncho Betty and the Indians,” and “A Dutch Tragedy,” both.of which were silent dramas, were followed by a screamingly funny one act play, “The New Paying Guest.” .. .■ . At 9 .p.m. the birthday rake, re-.-splendent with . its . three candles, apafter the. . candles were blown out with suitable wishes by District Captain'Mrs. F. C. King it was handed round by the Rangprs. Immediately after supper, came an item without no Ranger, celebration would be complete — : the haka, -.which was performed'in flax piu pins , made by Mrs. Hooper. Captain Miss B. Young thanked the hostesses on behalf of the Guiders, while Mrs. Lovell performed a like service on behalf of the “rest.” Acting Captain Miss Mary Quin briefly responded and the evening concluded with a eong of welcome specially prepared by the Rangers, but which was fol-gotten in th© stress and bustle ai the beginning of the ..■evening.,.,,
