ELTHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL

WORK ON’ THE STREETS. LORRIES WITH EXCESS LOADS. The Eltham Borough Council met last evening. A letter was received from the Minister of Internal Affairs giving notice of a board of enquiry to be held at Hawera on May 23, relative to town planning and requesting that the council be represented. The overseer reported that scarifying the tarred surface on Collingwood Street for a distance of seven chains was completed. Scarifying and regrading that portion of the Ladies’ Mile which urgently required attention was carried out, Tar patching was done on Collingwood Street, London Street,’ Stanners Street and King Edward Street. The asphalting of Bedford Street was completed. Tar patching was done on Bridge Street, Stanners Street and High Street. Attention is being given to the chipping of growth off paths and the ones attended to were Mountain Road north, Moir Street, Meuli Street, Bath Street, Kegworth Street and King Edward Street.

The . water pressure was still being well maintained. Cleaning the debris and growth from the Mangawarawara stream through the S.M. Park reserve was carried out. Blackberry cutting was affected in many cases. Cleaning the Mangawhero stream lowered the water level two feet below the bed of the race from the septic tank, whereas previously the water backed up the race toward the tank.

The traffic inspector stated that all heavy traffic fees had been collected. During the month several lorries, had been carrying loads in excess to their licenses and the inspector suggested that a loadameter be procured. He had made the inspection of the borough and where necessary given notices to have hedges cut and rubbish cleared from the roadsides. Dogs registered numbered 65 and fees collected amounted to £24 15s.

The caretaker's report said he had been employed, at Taumata Park for 10 days during the month. His work consisted of hedge trimming- at the Collingwood Street entrance, behind the

stand. Small gates were repaired and painted. He had returfed the cricket pitch, which required 400 feet of turf, the area to turf being 22 yards by two yards. Daffodil bulbs taken out during the season had been replanted. The abattoir report, showed the following killings: —Cows 54, bullocks 2, heifers 4, 'sheep 142, lambs 24, pigs 27. Two cows were condemned. The treasurer stated that £1715 Ils 3d had been received during the month and £1663 Is had been expended. The district fund showed a debit of £507 7s lOd and the following accounts were in credit: Domain, £Bl 18s lOd; cemetery, £49 Ils; sewerage loan, £36 Ils 7d; sewerage loan fixed deposit, £9OO.

One case, of scarlet fever occurred during the month, said the sanitary inspector. ' The works committee reported that the estimate for improving Mountain Road south had been approved by the Public Works Department. The matter of providing the unemployed relief for the coming winter was receiving attention. The matter of loadamctcrs for the local body group was to be referred to the Taranaki Local Bodies’ Association for consideration.

The reserves lawns were to be topdressed with basic super. An order-in-council was being applied for to increase the number of days on which charges could be made in Taumata Park. The matter of the purchase of the motor mower was receiving attention. The plan of subdivision on behalf of J. T. Searle and submitted by Govett and Quilliam was approved. RUGBY IN THE SCHOOLS. THE B GRADE FIXTURES. The B grade fixtures in the Central Division primary schools’ Rugby competition have been drawn as follows:—

Bamford, Harper, Donnelly, See, Verney, Fawcett, D. Vincent, Coon, Sullivan, E. Vincent, Coe and Ward. The team to represent Stratford first juniors in a match against Celtic at Victoria Park will be chosen from Young, Rudings, Collins (4), King, Blackstock (2), Lehmann, Johnson, Alger, Robson, Blackmore, Irving, Watson, Harris, R. Butcher, A. Keightley. Celtic will be represented by Walsh, Rowe, Davidson, Steiner (2), BiLski, Boyd, Pettigrew, Koeford, Harris, A. and C. Clements, Whiting, Jones, Carryer, Lawson, Smith, Herd, Milne. 1 PERSONAL. Mrs. G. Muggleton, Tututawa, left yesterday on a visit to England.
