WOMAN PASTOR
CTOR OHAN GA M ETHODI STS.
ATTITUDE OF THE CHURCH. A unique appointment in the Methodist Church was made last week when Sister Rita Snowden was inducted as pastor of the Otorohanga district. Sister Rita was doing home mission work in the Raelihi district until recently,, when she was appointed, to Otorohanga. The induction was performed by the Rev. A. Burley, chairman of the South Auckland district of the Methodist Church, and he was supported by the Rev. J. G. H. Grindlay, of Te Kuiti, and the Rev. W. Wills, of Te Awamutu. The new pastor was welcomed by representatives of the district.
“Sister Rita Snowden is not a minister as the term is generally understood, but a deaconess, who has been entrusted with home mission work,” said one of the Methodist leaders in Auckland. Asked if there were no women ministers in the Methodist Church, he replied in the negative, but added that the question of women in the ministry was coming to the fore. In England, for instance, a commission was now preparing to report on tho proposal. So far the matter had not been discussed at Methodist conferences in New Zealand, but it was possible that an appointment such as had recently been made in the ease of Sister Snowden might “try out the question” in this Dominion.
