Public swimming baths at Fitzroy were suggested in a recommendation from the works committee confirmed by the New Plymouth Borough Council last nig'ht. The town clerk was instructed to write io the Fitzroy Progressive Association regarding a suggestion by Or. Stain'ton that in lieu of baths at the school in Barriball Street public baths should be constructed on land to be acquired by the council from Messrs. Hooker Bros, and filled from the Waiwakaaho River by gravitation. The association is to be asked whether it will raise funds for. the construction if the council finds the site.
Remarking at the opening of the Wellington Flower Show that he had read •in the papers that the . Rangitiki had recently landed a large cargo of plants from England, annuals, biennials and perennials, Lord Bledisloe said: “There were also two hardy plants on board, Lady Bledisloe; and myself. I suppose we ehould.be called quinquennials; we are portainly not annuals. If the other imported plants thrive as well os we do in your beautiful climate they will ■indeed do well.” His Excellency then suggested that, instead of importing plants, local gardeners would do well to exploit the native flora, which had no equal in any other part of the world. An amendment to the Noxious Weeds Act to include power to make the cost of clearing a charge against the land when an occupier failed to comply with notices was some time ago suggested by the New Plymouth Borough Council. Replying last night the Hon. G. W. Forbes, Minister of Agriculture, said the value of the amendment was fully appreciated insofar as it would secure effective compliance with the provisions of the Act. At the same time tho proposal required very careful consideration. If it were made general in its application, it was felt, there would be grave danger of mortgage moneys being diverted from rural lands to the detriment of the farming community generally. On the other hand, the position regarding lands in boroughs and town districts might be considered on a somewhat different footing in relation to the objection mentioned. However, the suggestion from the council would be given careful consideration whenever amendments to the Act were being prepared.
