Constable S. Small, Rahotu, is on sick leave. During his absence Constable F. Lemin, Hawera, is relieving at Rahotu.

A Brisbane cable reports the death of the Rev. F. Dowling, aged 59, a former president of the Congregational Union of Australia and New Zealand. Mr. W. Purcell, Devonport, Auckland, has been selected from 20 applicants as the superintendent of the New Plymouth Borough Council’s electricity power house.

At the annual meeting of the Oak lira branch of the Farmers’ Union last night votes of sympathy were passed with the relatives of the lat-e Messrs. O. Jans and J. Sefton.

A vote of sympathy with the Rev. A. M. Bradbury, who is seriously ill in New Plymouth, was carried by the annual meeting of parishioner., of St. Mary’s Church last night. Mr. Bradbury was at one time a curate of the parish.

A resolution of sympathy with the family and relatives of the late Mr. C. J. Belcher, who took a prominent part in public life in Taranaki, was passed at ja meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council last night.

Mrs. T. R‘. Wheeler, Durham - Road, yesterday presented to Mr. L. M. Barr, curator ■ of the Taranaki Acclimatisation Society, a specimen of a devil fish and sea cow which she had brought from Queensland over 20 years ago. They are preserved in spirit. Visitors and guests at the New Plymouth Rotary Club luncheon yesterday included Rotarian C. E. Wheeler (Wellington), Messrs. D. J. Malone (Stratford), H. G. Taylor (Ngaere), G. T. Dawson (Wellington), H. L. Nortthern (Awakino), Alec. Thomson (Kelso) and A. J. Coleman (Wellington). Mr. Jack Stevenson was initiated as a member of the club.

Tilic death occurred last night of Mr. Richard Dingle, at one time chairman of the Stratford Dahy Company. His parents were among tire early settlers in Taranaki, his father arriving by the William Bryant and Iris mother (then Miss Veale) by the Amelia Thompson. Mr. Dingle was born in New Plymouth seventy-nine years ago and was asosciated with farming and dairy ■interests for many years. He occupied farms at Rowan and on Opunake Road, Stratford, retiring from the latter some years ago to live in New Plymouth. For the past few years his ■health has not been satisfactory and an operation two years ago failed to bring 'about a recovery.

Cutting a cake decorated with the appropriate number of candles, the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. Sir Joseph Ward) celebrated his 75th birthday in homely fashion at Prince’s Gate Hostel, Rotorua, on Saturday. All the members of the Prime Minister’s family in New Zealand hod gathered for the occasion. “It was a very pleasant gathering, and I enjoyed it very much, indeed,” said Sir Joseph Ward, in a telephonic communication when referring to the festivities. Hundreds of congratulatory messages from all parts of the Dominion were received by the Prime Minister throughout Saturday. Mr. William Purcell, of Auckland, has been appointed from 20 applicants to the position of power station superintendent at tho New Plymouth borough hydroelectric works at Mangorei. Mr. Purcell has had 23 years’ experience as erector, shift engineer, engine room foreman and steam superintendent. He first served an apprenticeship of five years in the West of Scotland and later joined the British India Steam Navigation Company, in whose service he obtained his second and .first-class engineers’ certificates. Coming to New Zealand he was engaged in various capacities by the Waihi Junction Gold Mining Company, and later in the electrical supply of the city of Auckland. During the last four years he held the positions of engineer-in-charge of the erection of the steam plant at the Queen’s Wharf power station i; Auckland, and subsequently superintendent of the" station. He was engaged for 22 years in the cm/"' Uje Auckland electric supply.
