STREETS OF NOLANTOWN. A request that the Hawera Borough Council should make provision on the estimates for the gradual improvement of Nolantown streets was made by a deputation from the Nolantown Ratepayers’ Association which waited on the council last night. The spokesman, Mr. W. Page, stated that while the association appreciated what had been done already, it considered it in the interests of the borough to tar-seal the few Nolantown roads that liad been permanently laid. This applied mainly to Glasgow, Perth, Galt and Clive Streets, which would rapidly deteriorate as the winter approached. It was suggested by Mr. McDonald that the works committee should make an inspection of the site. The town clerk quoted figures which showed more money was being spent in Nolantown than the council was strictly bound to spend. It was decided that the council should make an inspection of the streets under the direction of the association.

He considered it otherwise would be a hardship on hotel-keepers who had often to cope with a holiday rush and who had not sufficient provisions to deal with such a rush. There were , fewer than half a dozen such places in the area, and surely the inspector was able to see that the houses were kept in ord<?The motion was lost and the original clause adopted.
