SIDELIGHTS ON THE RACING. ALL WINNERS WELL BACKED.. (By Wire —Special to News.) Fine weather favoured the opening of the Avondale meeting to-day and excellent racing was witnessed. Most of the winners were well backed and there were no surprises. H. Gray was again in the limelight, riding three winners —Sir Mond,’ Lady Quex and Awarere. Six horses fell in the Avondale Hurdles, but none of the riders was seriously injured. Lady Day injured a tendon while contesting the Rbsebank Handicap, and was destroyed. As a result of one of his stirrup leathers breaking E. Ludlow received a fall from Avoncourt in the Chevalier Handicap and was taken to the hospital with injuries to his back and ribs.

Sir Mond, Royal Finance and Hannibal were best backed for the Rosebank Handicap. Operatic and Biddy Comet were smartest away to lead into the straight from Land Measure, Sir Mond, Hannibal and Good Idea. Once into the straight Sir Mond ranged alongside the leaders and came on to win by threequarters of a length from Operatic, who defeated Hannibal by half a length. Royal Finance was fourth, followed by Stonehenge, Good Idea and Biddy Comet. Sir Mond won well. He is an improving young horse and should win again soon. Operatic and Hannibal made good showings, while Royal Finance was closer at the finish than at any other stage. Stonehenge, Good Idea and Biddy Comet all shaped respectably, Stonehenge being a likely improver. AIRTIGHT JUMPS WELL.

A poor exhibition of jumping was witnessed' in the Avondale Hurdles, only four of the ten runners completing the course. Opa and Mountain Guide were the favourites, with Airtight fourth choice at a good price. Opa, Quincoma, and Archeen fell at the first fence, Air-

tight and Grand Arch being left clear. Airtight outjuinped Grand Arch at the fences along the back and he turned for home clear of Mountain Guide and Grand Arch, who fell at the second to last fence, where Negress and Thursby also came down. Airtight withstood a determined challenge from Mountain Guide and won by a neck. Dark Prince was 20 lengths away third, just ahead of Harbour View. Airtight’s jumping turned the scale in his favour. Mountain Guide again raced well and his turn should not be long delayed.

EAGLET BEATS IN THE SHADE.

flood wagering on the Foley Memorial Handicap saw Bright Glow, Eager Rose, In the Shade and Eaglet all heavily backed. Eaglet and Eager Rose made the running and they led into the straight just ahead of Corinax, with Lucy Rose, Royal Doulton, Kawainga

and Maori Boy next and In the Shade coming on the rails. In a good race to the post Eaglet stayed on to win by a neck from In the Shade, who defeated Corinax by a length. Eager Rose was fourth, closely followed by Nassock, Royal Doulton and Bright Glow. Eaglet and In the Shade are both trained by J. T. Jamieson, but race in different interests. Eaglet was well ridden in front by K. Voitre and stayed on well at the finish, where In the Shade, who came from a long way back, was also doing fine work. Corinax ran one of his best races, while Eager Rose. Royal Doulton and Nassock also made good showings. Bright Glow was last at the five furlongs post and therefore did well to be so close at the finish. HONITON SCORES EASILY. Honiton was a solid favourite for the Oakley Handicap, with support also for

Spring Abbey and Currajong. Mauriaena soon ran to the front to be the leader into the straight from Gay Cock add, Spring Abbey, Neil, Currajong, Honiton and I’m Alone. Spring Abbey had charge at the distance, but Honiton came through to win easily by a length from I’m Alone, who came on to beat Spring Abbey by two lengths. Neil was fourth, followed by Thurnus, Grand Tea and Carlaris. Honiton was ridden in behind and smothered the others at the finish. I’m Alone also finished well. Spring Abbey would have done slightly better if his rider had not been in such a hurry to reach the front at the turn. ' Currajong was badly placed early and after running up at the turn could not go on with it. LADY QUEX’S GREAT VICTORY.

Paganelli was a slightly better favourite than Lady Quex for the All-Aged Stakes, which attracted six runners. Wild Time, Hard Words and King Ford were together, in the lead early, Wild Time leading round the bend from Hard Words, Paganelli, Lady Quex and King Ford. ; As soon as the straight was reached Paganelli tackled the leaders and he just had their measure at the distance when Lady Quex came fast on the outside. Lady Quex maintained her run and came on to beat Paganelli by half a length, Wild Time being two lengths away third. Hard Words was fourth, with Green Linnet and King Ford next. Lady Quex was splendidly ridden by H. Gray, who waited patiently when the other riders were all anxious at the foot of the straight, and he brought his mount along with an irresistible run at the finish. Paganelli might have done slightly .better if McTavish had waited a little longer before going after the leaders. Wild Time displayed a. fine turn of speed and hung on fairly j well at the finish. King Ford shaped well enough to be fancied for the Juvenile Handicap on the second day, and Green Linnet finished on after tailing off early. CHROMADYNE FINISHES WELL. The Chevalier Handicap was a good betting race with Tenakoe, Treasury and Chromadyne best backed. Carl Idem and Chromadyne moved first and the field raced in close order for a couple of furlongs, when Ruling Chief dashed to the front. Ruling Chief was first into the straight, followed by Chromadyne, Norval Tea, Treasury and British King. Below the distance Chromadyne challenged on the rails and came on to win by three-quarters of a length from British King, who finished fast to beat Carl Idem by a length and a-half. Cruachan was fourth, followed by Treasury, Awamutu and Haviland. Chromadyne was always in the picture and won well. British King was unlucky as he was interfered with at the four furlongs post, where Avoncourt lost her I 'rider. Tenakoe also met trouble and; came back on British King. Carl Idem ran

a good race after having none the best of the luck, while Treasury made. a good showing after failing to begin with his usual brilliance. Cruachan and Awamutu both ran fair races. . AWARERE'S GOOD GALLOP. Another good pool on the Railway Handicap saw Mervette, Royal Parade and Richfield best backed. Awarere ran to the front after going a furlong to lead round the bend from Value, Volimond and Takutama. Awarere gave nothing any chance in the run 7 home and scored by two lengths from Royal Parade, Richfield was a length and a-half . away third. Takutama was fourth, with Mervette and Value next. Awarere, who put up 2|lb overweight to secure the services of H. Gray, galloped in his best' style and never looked like being beaten. Royal Parade and Richfield both finished well, Richfield coming from a very long way back. Mervette was also doing good work at the end, but the others were all well beaten. STANDFAST IMPROVES. Page Boy, La Choucas and Mosque were the favourites for the Titirangi Handicap. Le Choucas and Standfast, were the leaders, for a few furlongs, when King Emerald assumed command. Rounding the bend King Emerald just led Sir Russell, Page Boy, Le Choucas and Standfast. At the distance Standfast challenged and came on to score by a length and a-half from King. Emer-' aid, with Le Choucas a neck away third, j Mosque was fourth, with Page Boy and Sir Russell next. Standfast is on the, improve and should be useful at the winter meetings. Page Boy’.was unlucky at the start and after running up at the turn could not go on. Lq [ Choucas registered a good effort with i his big weight. Mosque is a likely improver and may do better next time out. SECOND DAY WEIGHTS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night.
