OUR POETRY

FAIR DAFFODILS. (Sent by “Clematis.”) Fair daffodils, we weep to see You haste away so soon, As yet the early rising sun Has not attained his noon. Stay, stay, Until the hast’ning day Has run but to the evensong! And, having prayed together, we Will go with you along. SOME LITTLE DROPS OF WATER. (Sent by Ivy Hollis.) Some little drops of water, Whose home was in the sea, To -go upon a journey Once happened to agree. The cloud they had for carriage They drove at play with Breeze, And over town and. country They rode along at ease. At last the carriage broke, And down to the ground came tumbling Those frightened little folk, And through the grass and mosses They all began to roam, Until a brooklet, found them And carried them all home. THE SNOWFLAKE. (Sent by Winnie Wright.) Whene’er a snowflake leaves the sky It turns and turns to «ay good-bye — “Good-bye. dear cloud, so cool and grey”; Then lightly travels on its way. And when a snowflake finds a tree, “Good-day,” it says, “good-day to thee; Thou art so bare and lonely, dear, I’ll rest and call my comrades here.” But when a snowflake brave and meek Lights on a maiden’s rosy cheek, It starte, “How warm and soft the day! ’Tie summer!” and it melts away. ICE NOT BEARING! (Sent by Joan Morgan.) Beside the pond, one frosty day, Stood Hugh. “Oh, this is nice! I’ll start and slide here straight away!” Qouth he, “I do love ice!” “Your words are very flattering, Hugh,” A chilly voice snapped back; “But —all the same, I can’t bear you!” And then there came a crack! TO DREAMLAND. (Sent by Olive Cleaver.) ’Tis sleepy time for little folks— For little girls and boys; So put away your playthings dears, Pick up your dolls .and toys, And come to/mother for awhile, And she will tell a tale Of little boats that every night For Fairyland set sail. When girls *ind boys are safe in bed, And all are fast asleep, The dream-sprites come and play about, And merry revels keep, And in their little fairy boats, To Dreamland far away, They carry boys and girl, and bring Them back before ’tis day. Come kiss and hug, and say good- . night, Each little sleepyhead, The little boats will come when you Are fast asleep in bed. STUPIDITY STREET..

(Sent by Alex Cox.)

I saw with open eyes Singing birds sweet, Sold in the shops For people to eat, Sold in the shops of Stupidity Street. I saw in a vision The worm in fihe wheat, And in the shops nothing For people to eat, Nothing for sale in Stupidity THE BUTTERFLY AND THE BEE. (Sent by Merle Druce.) A bee, overladen, had met with a tumble. A pert little butterfly said, “How you grumble.” “If grumbling is not to your taste,” grumbled he, “Flutter by, Butterfly, quick as can be.” “I am the one to put up with the tumble; Why then complain when your share’., ’just the grumble?” “True,” caid the Butterfly, “never mind me, “Grumble Humble Bumble Bee.”
