WESTOWN SCHOOL

COMMITTEE MEETING HELD. The West End school committee met in New Plymouth on Thursday evening. The headmaster, Mr. J. A. Shimmin, reported that the total roll was 457, and the average atendance 424. This, he said, meant that 33 pupils were absent every time school was opened, which was very unsatisfactory when the state of the weather w-as considered. Miss Wooldredgo had taken cliargo of a section of standard IV. as a relieving teacher. Mr. Tayler, supervisor of music, had visited the school, spending most of his time in the special room; The inspectors, Messrs. McKenzie, Griffin and Henry, had also visited the school. The committee decided to bring the question of attendance up at . the forthcoming householders’ meeting. The headmaster was authorised to buj two basketballs and two footballs. The school Old Girls’ Basketball Club was granted the use of the school grounds and schoolrooms for play and meetings. The matter of concreting the front of the school was left for the incoming committee. Subsequent to the school meeting the scout committee sat in conjunction with tho school committee.

The visiting committee reported that last Tuesday there was an attendance of 32 cubs under Leslie McDonald’s and Ivan Hodder’s charge. There was slight disorganisation of the. troop owing to tho holidays.' The Scouts were attending well, and there were 17 present at last parade.
