SOCIAL AND GENERAL ITEMS.
The first of Mrs. Winter’s euchre parties took place on April 15, when there was a fair muster of players and dancers. The dance music was provided by Mr. Phil. Meredith, and the winners of the euchre prizes for the night were Mrs. Jury, Mrs. Norman Wells, Mr. Jones and Mr. Jack Jans. The new hall committee was in charge of the proceedings. The chairman is Mr. P. Tel-’ ford, secretary Mr. C, J. Harris, and the committee Messrs. L. Rusting, K. Marsh, F. Telford, Walsh and C. Jans. The annual meeting of the local branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held on April 15. There was a good proportion of the members present. It had been hoped that Mrs. C. C. Jackson, the Dominion President, would be present, but it was found impossible at the last moment for her to fit the visit into her itinerary. The. branch president, Mrs. C. J. Harris, presented a report of the year’s activities. It was gratifying to note, she said, that the membership had been doubled during the year. The finance of the branch was in a favourable condition. The branch will again organise the class for Red Cross lectures. The president, in her office of Dominion vicepresident, had attended during the year two meetings of the bush nurse auxiliary, at Wanganui and Wellington, and the mid-year executive meeting in Wellington. The Oakura branch had assisted in entertaining the overseas farmers’ party, Mrs. Harris being the division’s representative at the meetings of the reception committee in New Plymouth. The officials for this year are: President, Mrs. C. J. Harris; vicepresidents, two were elected; secretary, Mrs. Mahon; committee, Mrs. W. Morris, Mrs. Li Brown, Mrs. E. Penwarden and Mrs. Haskell.
The school children gave a most creditable performance of concert items at the 2YB studio, New Plymouth, on Wednesday night, under the direction of Mrs. Harris. The children were taken to the town by Mr. Mahon and Mr. Harris, Mr. A. B. MacDonald taking the second car-load for the-return journey. The young performers thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and the studio officials accorded them hearty praise for the way in which they carried out their part, and said the concert was one of the best of its kind that had ever been given from the station.
