CHORAL WORK PROMISED
WELLINGTON AND NEW PLYMOUTH
NOTED CONDUCTOR TO ATTEND.
A combined concert by the Royal Wellington Choral Union and the New Plymouth Choral Society will be held in New Plymouth in August next. A special visit to New Plymouth was made by the secretary of the Wellington union, Mr. W. E. Caldow, to make arrangerrients with the New Plymouth society for the concert. Tho committee of the New Plymouth society met Mr. Caldow on Tuesday evening. About 80 members of the Wellington union had already said they would make the trip, said Mr. Caldow, and the party would probably be 100 strong. T Weh would probably be 100 strong.. The Wellington people would leave Wellington by tho night train on the Thursday, arriving in New Plymouth on the I’riday morning. The concert would take place on the Saturday, and the party would leave by tho mail train on the Monday morning. The work chosen for the combined programme by the two choirs is Cole-ridge-Taylor’s “Scenes from Hiawatha,” which was so successfully produced, in dramatised form, by the Wellington union last year. A trio of specially chosen soloists will bo engaged; negotiations having already been opened with some of the leading vocalists of the Dominion for this concert. The new conductor of tho Wellington union, Mr. John Bishop, has accepted the invitation of the New Plymouth society to act as guest-conductor for the season. This arrangement is tho outcome of a conference of representatives, of musical societies held in Wellington last year, and it will be the first occasion on which Mr. Bishop has appeared outside Wellington since his arrival in the Dominion from England. In the two years ho has been in Wellington Mr. Bishop has made his influence .on music in the city felt in a very marked manner, and those who heard the broadcast of his orchestral concert from the Wellington Town. Hall recently have spoken in terms of the highest praise of the standard of the performance, in which over SO instrumentalists tok part.
