BREEDING SUSSEX FOWLS

WORK OF NEW ZEALAND CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING HELD. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Sussex Club was held recently at Stratford, Mr. H. J. Kirkwood presiding. The president, in reviewing the past season’s operations, said all must experience pleasure at the great strides in popularity the Sussex fowl was making in New Zealand. The acquiring of knowledge in reference to the fowl’s characteristics as a dual purpose bird was a source of gaining a deyotee to its ranks, and once a fancier of the Sussex fowl one accorded it an appreciation that never waned. It was gratifying, Mr. Kirkwood said, to note the large increase in the membership, which had enabled the club to extend its activities and ramifications. The balance-sheet showed that the finances of the club were in a satisfactory condition. The club’s fourth annual show was held in July in conjunction with the Wanganui Poultry Club’s show, and proved a great success. The English Sussex Club had again sent two silver medals. That allotted to the club’s show at Wanganui for the best adult bird in the fancy class (male or female) was won by Mrs. W. Cannon, Stratford. The other, allotted to the Stratford winter show for best young bird (either sex) in the fancy section, was won by Mr. A. J. Davey, Stratford. The New Zealand Sussex Club cup, valued at £5 55., was for competition for the first time at the club’s show at Wanganui for best young bird in the fancy class, to be won three times, each year’s winner to receive a N.Z.S.C. ribbon. It was won by Mr. A. J. Davey, Stratford. A special cup given to the Christchurch Poultry Club for best bird in the fancy sections was won by Mr. J. Cracroft Wilson, Christchurch. This fancier also won the N.Z.S.C. ribbon for the best adult bird in the fancy class at the Stratford winter show. Mr. A. J. Davey, Stratford, won the N.Z.S.C.’s ribbon for the best adult bird in the utility section at the Stratford/winter show. The South Island Sussex fowl championship was won by Mr. P. A.
