NEW P. AND O. LINERS. An order for two passenger liners- for the Australian service of the Peninsular- and Oriental Steam Navigation Co., Ltd., has been placed with VickersArmstrong, Ltd., Barrow-in-Furness. The order for these two ships, which is the largest individual order secured by the Barrow yard during the last 10 years, will very considerably relieve the unemployment position, as the work on the ships will absorb an average of approximately 2500 men for nearly two years in Barrow alone. Taking into consideration the indirect work which will be provided by the supply of materials from different parts of the country, it may be assumed that the average total number of people who will find employment from this important contract will be more than double that number during the period that the ships are under construction. The vessels, as in the case of the Viceroy of India, will be propelled by turbo-electrie machinery, manufactured by the British Thomson-Houston Company, of Rugby. The boilers will be of the latest highpressure water-tube type designed by Yarrow and Co., Ltd. The boilers for one ship will be built by Yarrows, and those for the second vessel will be by Vickers-Armstrong, Limited. The new ships will be larger and faster than the Viceroy of India, which was delivered to the P. and O. Company last year. . PASSENGER SERVICE TO CEASE. The New Plymouth-Onehiihga passenger service is being abandoned by the Northern Company and the Ngapuhi is to withdraw from the run when she returns to Onehunga from New Plymouth on May 3. She will then go to Auckland and relieve the Clansman in the Russell service on May 5, while the Clansman undergoes overhaul. The Ngapuhi will be replaced on the West Coast by the motor vessel Hauturn, which will run a bi-weekly cargo service between Onehunga and New Plymouth. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS.
