STRATFORD MOUNTAIN CLUB
EXTENSION OF ACTIVITIES, To consider extending the scope of the Stratford Mountain Club so as to cater for the activities of alpinists a well attended public meeting was held in Stratford last night. Mr. A. David presided. The club was originally formed to carry out certain work around the mountain house and did not concern itself directly with alpine activities. Those who desired to take part in such activities joined the Mt. Egmont Alpine Club with headquarters at llawera. The chairman said it was felt that Stratford should have an organisation of its own to carry out such work and rather than form another club it was deemed desirable to extend the scope of the already established Stratford Mountain Club.
Some confusion arose at the meeting as to what was actually intended and much time was spent in more or less futile argument, but finally a sub-com-mittee was set up to act in conjunction with the present club to formulate a scheme and to appoint what additional officers might be needed for the new branch of the club. Members, of the Stratford Mountain Club as it is now constituted will not be affected by the extension unless they desire to take part in alpine climbing etc., in which case they will join the new branch and will pay a slightly larger subscription commensurate with the benefits they will receive from the use of any plant or equipment. The sub-committee elected was: Dr. W. P. P. Gorden (chairman), Misses R. Pople (secretary), A. Shandley, E. McDonald, L. Griffin, M. Whiteside and Messrs. W. Pettigrew, M. Gernhoefer, C. Hodge, L. Gibson, W. J. Dwyer, A. White and J. C. McDonald. When it has come to an arrangement with the executive of the club regarding the extension that sub-committee will disband automatically.
