The prom 7.ent New Zealand horse Tidal has broken down, and will probably be withdrawn from the Sydney Cup. "OVER THE FENCE.” (By “Paritutu.”) WELL-DONE-ovan I ft * * * The Swell is a real toff. # ft ft ft Know anything,“dry’ for Masterton? ft y * ft * * Pedestal fell off his —at Awapuni.. * ft * ‘ * Autopay really ought to at Master ton. » # # ft Rapier has mislaid his final thrust. ft ft ft ft Airtight’s appropriate rider —Salt! # ft ft * Belle “Starred” again on Thursday last. # ft ft ft Eaglet had her wings clipped in the Gold Cup.
Airforce and Skyrider were a bit above themselves. * # * * One hurdler we know will Elicit the judge’s attention soon. # -«■ , # * Toxeuma is not a disease, but he has been bitten'by the bad luck bug. #' * # * Annandale’s dictionary says that “Aurora Borealis is a luminous iheteoric phenomenon of varying brilliancy.” Too true! Father and daughter, Lackham and Lady Lackham, were in the rearguard of . the Lockwood Handicap. Quite a family party, as it were. « « * « The great fight came off after all. So there was nothing in the tale about Tommy contracting chicken pox from Sarron’s “fowl.” « # # # “Easy to remember” is a term applied by a down-the-line paper to a quote of fid. per lb. for wool. “Hard to forget” is more like it! * # * # ‘Reported that Tommy Donovan did not look one-half as sick after Saturday’s encounter as some of the gentry who laid long odds against him. $ 3> 31 # In New Zealand we are used to lengthy names for light harness horses, but a Tasmanian winner the other day rejoiced in the brief appellation of “If.” * # # # ‘There is said to be no truth in the statement that Cadbury’s, Ltd., have engaged Lindriun and McConachy for the purpose of making “hundreds and thousands.” »•* * # The easiest win at the police sports held .in Sydney recently was in the open hundred ya;|ls. The report says that Constable So-and-so “won by a foot.” ». # * There must'be some optimistic horseowners in Australia, judging by the names which are figuring on the cards. Just listen: Urunaway, Win All, Hop Out, Some Worth, Niekalong, Carry On, Willowyn and Hilda’s Fortune. Other queer names are: What About It, Go Getter, Cat’s Feet, Cookapint, Clinkafix, Roaring Roger, Determined Tom, My Maa Mee, Tea Fight, Rooster, Boy Scout, Our Spree, Shillingsworth, Joe’s Gold and Queen’s Luck (late King’s Ruin). « « # # At Awapuni. The field swings into the straight. A well-known trainer standing on the stand set aside for trainers spots his horse among the leaders. “Got a show, now; got a show,” he shouts to a friend on the members’ stand. But his horse drops back. His howl of disgust still rings in one’s ears. “Show — yes, fisho!” he wailed; # * * # A" race- was just oyer, and the jocks, were weighingmi. very . pleased owner held the winner’s bridle, -waiting for the “all right” signal. Up comes a young “stipe,” bubbling over with importance. To the owner he says: “What happened to your horse at Blank meeting?” ‘Had rotten luck; .should have walked in!” replied the owner, without batting an eyelid. The “stipe’ ’disappeared.
“DOWN THE (By “Paritutu.”) With H. Goldfinch out of the saddle temporarily, and 11. Gray in Sydney, Bert. Morris looks like topping the winning riders very soon. His three successes at Awapuni brought his tally up to 44, as against Gray’s 48 and Goldfinch’s 4G. * * Trainer J. T. Jamieson failed to add to his total of 31 wins at the Manawatu meeting. S. G. Ware (25) and C. Geisler (22) follow him, and J. Fryer, who won with Green Linnet, has gone up to 19. R. Johnson has led in 13 winners, and W.. Mantle 12. # a =» w The flags were half-masted at Awapuni last week out of respect for the late Mr. Robert Stevens, who for about 25 years acted as judge and timekeeper. In *the early days he was noted as a gentleman rider, and later on as a trainer. He “weighed-in” at 80. # w * • Some good-class “milers” have been entered for the A.R.C. Easter Handicap. Amongst the number which have been seen in form recently are Toxeuma, Hunting Day, Historic, Ceremony, Paganelli and, Vertigern. Taranaki will, of course, pin its faith to Bright Glow, Paitonu, Lady Quex and Silvermine. ’ # # # # Owing to a mishap to the Makura’s engines, and the consequent withdrawal of the Mararna from the inter-colonial trade, a number of horses intended for Sydney could not get away last week, but it is expected that they will leave on Friday. They include Glare, Goshawk, Gesture, Concentrate, Cimabue and Habit, and on recent form they should pay their way on the other side. Mr. J. W. Lowe is stated to have received an offer of 3000 guineas for Glare, subject to the gelding passing the veterinary surgeon. # « # * Ceremony Ipoked as if a gallop would do him good when sent out to contest the sprint handicap on the first day at Awapuni, and he ran a wonderfully good race, all things considered. His showing in the Manawatu Stakes, when the pace was really on all the way, was not so good, but it would be -unwise to rate him cheaply on that account. About Easter the bay son of Absurd and Pennon should be labelled “dangerous.” **# # - • The Jong spell of dry weather has caused the tracks to become very hard on all down-the-line courses, and trainers are joining hands with the farmers in hoping for rain. In all cases, fast work is limited to the plough, and' if rain does not come soon there will be many sore horses (and trainers ditto) by the time Easter rolls along. AUCKLAND EASTER HANDICAP. HUNTING DAY’S FORM EXAMINED. Thirty-six high-class middle-distance performers have been entered for the Auckland Easter Handicap this year, and there is every prospect of a great field "oing to the post. °*# w • Arnone the others that will be Required to carry rather less weight, Paitonu (Thompson Handicap winner), Hunting Day (winner - of several sprints) 5 , Taneriri (a top-class performer when the sting is out of the going), Great Charter, Richfield, White Fang, Mervette, Prince Vai, Ceremony and Prince of Orange must z all be worthy of consideration.
Taranaki, as usual,.is represented by a quota of good class milers, and it is pleasing to see that Bright Glow, Silvermine, Paitonu, Richfield, Lady Quex and Monsogne have been accorded nomination. a « 4 fl With Pegaway in the field, Handicappei’ MeManemin will not have to look far for the top weight, but Paganelli, Bright Glow (last year’s winner), Historic, Silvermine, Vertigern and Toxeuma will not be in receipt of many pounds from the consistent Aucklander. * # _. # ♦ At this stage a.quartette early selected to play a prominent part are Toxeuma, Hunting Day, Silvermine and Great Charter, whose recent efforts have all given the impression that they are on the up-grade. * * * # Ellerslie is a track on which a brilliant beginner has a big pull on the top-weights, unless they include speed artists of the , calibre of Reremoana, Silver Link, Nonette and Co., who shouldered big weights. when they led fields home in their respective years; but generally the winner of the Easter Handicap has been produced from the middle of the- handicap. *#■ # # Although Hunting Day has won twice in open sprint company, the Hunting Song gelding cannot be justly burdened with more than eight stone, and most likely the handicaps will show him assessed at several pounds below that mark. Seven furlongs is as far as he has gone yet, but in all his races he has been going better over the final stages, and there seems to be no reason to think that a mile is beyond his compass. * * # * At Trentham last month Hunting Day was produced in the Railway Handicap and drew the outside of a field o a dozen. He began brilliantly in an even start and when challenged in the straight he drew away in a manner which 'made the other sprinters look ridiculous. This was Hunting : Day’s fifth win in six starts this season. By Hunting Song, who has proved an early success at the stud in New Zealand, Hunting Day’s dam, Gay, was bred by Gazeley from Amusement, who gave the New Zealand Turf a top-notch sprinter in Chortle. So far Gay has not been represented by anything approaching good class, though Many Colours and Olympic were payable propositions. #. # * Judging by hig most recent performance, Hunting Day will be a class above his dam’s earlier progeny, and his brilliance will' be a big asset on the Ellerslie racecourse. The Easter this year looks like being a very hard race to win, but with his qualifications and under a reasonable weight, Hunting Day appeals tv the majority as being one of the most dangerous contenders for honours in the rich Easter mile. «> a a » Hunting Day’s performances to date are.— At Two Years. £ 2nd Avondale Stakes 150 2nd A-R.C.
